I don't know that I've ever actually heard one. I mean, I'm sure I have on records, but not in a recording situation. Now that their prices seem to have caught up a bit, are they still something special? I have always heard they are kind of unique sounding, but I don't know in what way(s).
I only own two tube mics - a Joly modded MKL2500 (sounds amazing on the right source, but has no headroom, so my loud projects often aren't a good fit) and a Royer MXL2001 project mic that sounds pretty cool, though I don't use often.
Related - what about the AEG mics manufactured with Lomo parts I see on Reverb frequently? Or are those too different/unique to really judge/categorize?

I know Rob Schnapf uses them a lot.

Steve Albini used one on Kurt Cobain, the 19A9 for in utero

The 19A19 I used was pretty amazing. I think it's very much like the issues around early Gefells, very inconsistent and lots that have been reworked. More attention is needed in vetting before buying.

Steve Albini used one on Kurt Cobain, the 19A9 for in utero I know he used Lomo mics on that record, but my understanding is the vocals were recorded with an EV PL20.

Having worked on quite a few Lomo capsules I would say that their design philosophy is different than western thinking. They have complicated builds and are prone to problems.

No experience with the originals, but the Lomo 19A13 type pair I had built with CT12 capsules are finally sounding amazing, after some hair-pulling. They have 6S6BV tubes and had original Lomo transformers, but the transformers were absolutely horrible and sounded different from each other. It was even the second pair I went through! Finally replaced them with some custom Crimson 9.5:1 transformers and that’s what did the trick! Absolutely amazing now! AMI T13s are also great there, but I liked the Crimsons slightly better in these mics. If anyone needs a pair of the originals...

They only gained some desirability in the west because they could be had cheap and after being rebuilt with western components.

For a more modern (and reliable) take, the Soyuz 023 "Bomblet" is inspired by a Lomo design.

Thanks Mark, I was just about to post that. I only sang/tested the Bomblet a bit, but really liked it! Kinda like the original Mini-Cooper, compared to the modern incarnation. The originals, had their own charm though. A close friend, had one in their heyday, and said it was a blast to drive in England. Chris

I have their 19A19 and really quite like it. Use it along side U87, 414EBs, CMV563 and it's just another flavor. Never found it to be better or worse than the others.
Had access to a second for a while and they were great on overheads, vocals, acoustic guitar, piano.

Here's a lil shootout with the 19A9 against some of the usual suspects

There may be no better mic than the 635A......if SM57’s are the only option.....
