I use my 16a this way... 2 sets of monitors and headphones all running on separate outputs from the onboard mixer each with volume control and mutable so theirs no need for a analog monitor controller. The outputs drive a pair of headphones just fine for a mix reference, but probably not enough for tracking phones in every situation. I send another 8 outputs ( four stereo aux mixes)to a ross audio install amp that boosts the levels enough to send to unpowered headphone taps with a volume pot I mount to a mic stand near the musician. They can optionally control their own aux mix wirelessly.

That's one thing I like about the Presonus and Focusrite ones, the either non-existant or minimal software mixer. To me, that's a plus, I don't like dealing with that stuff either. I would assume there would be some set and forget thing in the MOTU you could work up though, if you don't change your configuration that often. I work in a place with a MOTU AVB system. 828es and 16A. The setup is fine. I disabled all the mixer stuff, and just got around the grid for half an hour. Once you understand the "From Computer" and "To Computer" lines, you are good to go. I like the Monitor A/B option and the Mono button on the from of the 828. And you can configure all of them to any output. Even the Headphones, 2 on the 828es, you can configure to have the same or different outputs from the DAW. Anyway, it's a fine system imo. I think I lost more time on TotalMix the first time I used it. Thanks, this allays my concerns a bit... seems like it's a workable routing tool to get set up. And yes, the monitor outputs and physical selection buttons are a big reason I have been looking at MOTU.

That's a really slick system, nice! This is interesting because models like the 828es have dedicated monitor and headphone outputs. The 16A has neither of those. But, of course, you can assign any of the 16A line outs as monitor outputs, or headphone outputs (as long as you have an external headphone amp for each set of cans). Letting each musician adjust their mix using their mobile device is brilliant. Then, I assume, you are using the internal mixer to enable/disable monitors? So you need to have the mixer window open all the time on your computer or mobile device, yes? I'll keep this all in mind. If I don't want any mic preamps in an interface, then the 16A is still a great option to give me all the I/O I need in one device.

That's basically what I did as well. Once you set up the aux mixes in the mixer, have that tab open its very easy to do "more me".

I don’t know what I am doing with most of this stuff. If I was able to figure out the Motu routing and mixer without having to call them, most anyone should be able to. There are a couple of good threads on the site about the routing. I have an 828es as well and it does what I want since I have gone to a more hybrid set up. A Silver Bullet stays parked on two analog I/O channels as a mixbus hardware insert and I have three Daking Micpre IIs on the other six inputs. I have an audient 8 channel preamp I can hook up through ADAT if I were to ever need more channels simultaneously plus the two pres on the interface itself. I have all this stuff hooked up more for convenience rather than necessity since I don’t do much recording with other people at the moment. I love this interface. I am also not a “pro” but very serious hobbiest so take that for what it’s worth.
ETA: I ultimately decided on the 828es because some of the same good and patient people who have already posted in this thread also answered questions I had. This site is most helpful in that way.

I use a key command to toggle between the daw mixer and the motu mixer. I use 2 monitors- one for main edit window and plugs and the other for the mixers. Its also possible to have a tablet control the motu so Ive tried that as a"monitor controller" but dont find it necessary

I use a single LG 'ultra wide' monitor (nice for seeing DAW tracks spread out full length), but I can easily flip between app screens. Thanks for the tip.

Very impressed with the 4 pages of intelligent and experienced responses and discussion I've received on this question!

I’m curious what people’s thoughts are on the Focusrite Red 16 Thunderbolt 3 converter. It’s got some nice input options. I wonder how it compares sonically with an Apollo 16x or Lynx.

CLA is using the RedNet stuff. I think the big advantage with these is you can scale them into massive I/O setups with multi-room zones via ethernet and so on. I was shopping them for a while but I decided to save money and go with the Presonus Quantum for my smaller need purposes.

The only thing that kept me away from the red was the fan. Otherwise, I think they sound really great.

Vincent, my good friend Dusty Wright did a couple of albums using his Focusrite Clarett to track and my Apollo to mix, and it came out nicely.
He just bought an Apollo desktop and it is better overall than the Clarett. I recently heard few tracks of kcat's using the Lynx Aurora, and that was in a different league.

The RED line should be a step up from the Clarett line, athough the Claretts are good mid level interfaces, certainly.

Lynx is much better than any Focusrite. I’d avoid all modern Focusrite unless you’re building a huge Dante rig. I’d avoid them even on a budget. They’ve raised the prices of the Clarett 2 Pre too much. 500 new for that when 600ish gets you into MOTU stuff is ridiculous.

Hello to everybody.. I Have a Dangerous 2 Bus LT for summing OTB and RME 802... Which one would be the best Interface/Converter in $ 1500 Range to expand to 16 Channel... Ferrofish Pulse 16 Motu 16A o 24AO Antelope Discrete 8 (Only 8 Ch + RME 8 Ch.). I been told this one is better AD & DA but only 8 ... and it supossed to be better load 16 CH on one Interaface/Converter (Latency and Phase Problems) Other people told me RME 802 Is better converter over Motu & Ferrofish.. What else Thanks...

I have been using Lynx since the 90s. I suppose I am use to their sound. But they keep on getting better and better. And their customer service has always been super. However, for mixdown (out of the box) I am going out of the Lynx to a Lavry Sativr with monitoring (D/A) with a Forssell Mada-2 which is great for D/A.

Cranborne audio stuff is tempting me. 8 or 16 proper preamps in 500 form. My Antelope Orion is showing some signs of impending doom, and after that happens, Cranborne will be my next stop.

The Cranborne stuff is great. I’ve really enjoyed the 500ADAT, EC2 and a couple of their CAST breakout boxes which I’m using to connect my synth dungeon and DIs back to the ADAT way across the room. The features for the price are amazing, especially if you take advantage of the I/O. Everything just works. And they’re nice guys, too, if you have questions. Curious to see what they decide to tackle next.
