I honestly hardly have ever used an eq and thought “that’s screwing up my sound” - I mean reputable plugs. This thread only came from being frustrated with pulling out some weirdness in a vocal and feeling like I was chasing my tail and it still being either harsh or dull. Then I demoed Crave and really though I felt the moves were making more of a substantial difference. Maybe that’s not the way to describe it, but whether it’s conf bias or not, it sounds to me like it’s easier to get where I’m going with this thing.

That's what I felt about Crave, I thought the moves made more of a difference and that I could really hear the changes which then inspired me more because it instantly sounded "better" I thought i could get close (perhaps even almost the same?) using FF but it took more work/more moves and more screwing around. Interesting that you are saying the same.

Yea. That makes some sense. I mean, I love FF just based on the features and ease of use with the GUI. But, when I first tried it years ago I was like "what the". I had to really push it around to get sounds. So I didn't buy it for a while. Then I tried it again and bought it years later for workflow. I figured that so many pros use it I must just need to learn how.
I still like my Eiosis EQ, Renaissance EQ etc. I just bought Crave, though. It does sound good. Sounds very clean and useable. I still like working with FF, and it won't make my records that much better, but I think it'll be good to use on some songs or tracks. The more the merrier... for now...

I've heard EQ's screw up my sound. These better ones that screw up your sound less have that feeling of being "more." Not sure how to describe it, they don't take things away. Maybe because they have less artifacts. or maybe because the curves are more appropriate, maybe both. Not exactly sure.
Something like Waves Q10, a 29 year old plugin, might make your track a tiny bit hard or plasticky sounding for example, to use some exaggerated words. Do some moves on a bass guitar and you will hear the tone change, not regarding the EQ curve.
But certainly the ones that are the most effective have that feeling of effortlessness.

I've heard people saying things like that about the Crave also, having their favorites of all the different modes. Certainly it's worth a listen but in my experience this is where it gets even more picky and anal retentive. The biggest difference will be between digital phase and Linear Phase. Digital phase and analog phase / natural phase really should be quite similar, maybe a subtle difference with those two. But Linear Phase is another animal, in any EQ that has that mode.

So maybe the reason I'm thinking Crave is making "more of a difference is because of the way I had the freq display range set up. I usually use Pro Q set to 30db. When I make sure I'm making the same cuts, I'm not sure I hear that much difference anymore. I might have been comparing apples to oranges before.

That's an interesting observation that, I admit, I hadn't even considered. Crave seems to default to 18db and I have FF defaulted to 12db so, in my case, it's kind of the opposite relationship of what you've got going on. I'm going to set them the same and do some more listening.

Are you guys at least matching the freq, gain and Q values, regardless of what the display range is doing?

Are you guys at least matching the freq, gain and Q values, regardless of what the display range is doing? I was when A/B'ing but not when I was just 'using' the EQ on a track to see how I enjoyed it's workflow (which now that it has been pointed out is kind of embarrassing) I just spent a few minutes comparing the two, trying to be as scientific as possible. I did an 1k 12db Bell @ +6db, a 5k 12db High Shelf @ 6db and a 100 Hz 12 dB Low Shelf at 6 db. Crave (Digital) vs FF (Zero Latency) the Shelves both null completely with a tiny bit of output gain adjustments, but the best I could do with the bell was to get it to cancel out about -48 db Crave (Analog) vs FF (Natural Phase) the Shelves also null with the tiny bit of output gain adjustments. The bells cancel out about -53 db (so closer than the DIGIAL modes) Crave offers a Mixed phase mode called "Transparent" which FF doesn't but the Low Shelves do cancel because it's the same as the Analog/Natural Phase and the highs also cancel in Transparent when FF is on Linear Phase but, of course in FF you are limited to only using Linear OR Natural whereas Crave is a hybrid which is kind of cool and I think is ultimately what it brings to the table. Maybe I'll just stick with the FF workflow I've used since Pro-Q1 (and save myself $70!)

Demoing this Vs Oxford. It’s really fast. I can set stuff with less clicks. The problem is inserting a new filter and changing the filter type is a bit slower. Sound is great.
PSP Master Q2 is still my favorite for high q cuts but the workflow kinda sucks with the year 2002 gui and it’s very heavy.

The only real gripe I have with Crave is that if I double click a point, I want it to enable/disable, not solo it.

I use Crave all the time. it's in every mix when I need a good clean EQ. Nothing beats it for me. I still use a ton of other more specialized EQs, like Pultec of Summit type EQs but I find Crave to be very musical. It would be great if he incorporated some dynamic EQ settings into it but from what I've heard, he doesn't have any interest in it. So I use F6 for dynamic EQ and Crave for everything else. I have to say though, F6 is great for cuts and controlling harsh frequencies. It is not good at top end boosts. Not sure why but I never like boosting with F6. Crave is fine to boost or cut. It always sounds smooth and "right" to my ears.

Hate to muddy the waters further, but if you guys are looking for a nice clean surgery eq plug that stays clear even with deep, narrow mid cuts, give the Voxengo Gliss eq a spin. It's a dynamic eq, but i keep all the bands' dynamics turned off and just use it for pulling out odd resonances and the like. It's pretty remarkable, to my ears. Much tighter and more coherent the Fab Filter, and, with a way better spectrum analyzer (ya know...if you're into that sorta thing...)

They all sound good but the user interface bothers me for some reason. I know we should mix with our ears but there's something about the design that just puts me off. I can't complain about the sound though.

Heavy=excessive dsp usage ? PSP Master Q2 is very heavy and has over 1000 samples of latency.

Unless they model an aspect of saturation or tube/transformer I/O aren’t all these cookbook DSP EQ’s the same?
Yes they have different GUI’s, features and workflows (which is important) but sound wise well ….
I managed to null to total silence my expensive Sonnox Oxford EQ3 to the stock EQ in Cubase.
So much for the Sonnox having a great sound!
I should try nulling Pro 3 and Equilibrium to the Cubase stock EQ - they will portably null too.
