Awesome! I loved my Mike E when I had it. Always regretted selling that one.

I didn't get along nicely with the Mike-E. It was a long time ago, so it was likely my issue, and not the unit's issue. What am I missing here?

It's a bit too expensive right now at $200. I have many Softube products but this is a little too specialized to spend that kind of money on. It does look interesting and I saw a demo of it that was fairly impressive. But in the end, I don't think it will improve my mixes enough to warrant the price.

Empirical Labs has its own software eq that it is selling - I think for about $100. It is really good.

Dave Derr seems to be following the SSL route and licensing out to everyone.

Hard for me to get excited. For one thing I have the UAD Distressor in my arsenal which does what I need when I need that.
I've dug Mike E the times I've used 'em. IMO the compressor is like a "distressor lite" or distressor for dummies. Effective and less flexible, but also less "fuck up able" so its hard to ruin something which is largely a good thing!
Truthfully I just don't get the whole modeling preamps w/plugins deal. Seems like it'd have made more sense as UAD unison but maybe that's my bad trip. So all I really see there is a compressor.
Been a while since I've had an encounter with the Lil Q but I remember it as being the best EQ I've ever used that did everything but sound good.
Was always hard to find a place for them. Just too many options, really too easy to dial in some terrible sounds which maybe says more about me then anything else...
Given the flexibility IMO the natural place was 2-mix or mastering... but if I need that kinda precision & options on the 2-mix it probably means I need to keep working on the mix itself. For mastering? I'd rather have a GML or Millennia. Massive Passive? Something a little more instantly gratifying especially given the cost of the analog gear.

Yeah, I'm on the fence with these. I have Arousor and I'm interested in Big Freq, but this becomes a little redundant maybe.

I've been trying out some stuff and this Mike-E from Softube is a really great master bus compressor. It makes the audio smoother, but also more exciting, and is really good at evening out the dynamics. Also seems to balance the mix better by removing some of the rumble. I've been trying it against a lot of stuff. Things like Magenta, DS-1, UAD 670, UAD Distressor, and MDWDRC2. For my rock and metal stuff, it's just better. I have not tried it against Unisum yet. This Mike-E is something else, it does a lot of mix reorganizing in a good way. Definitely not something I've heard anything else do and this one is really flying under the radar. It's very, very versatile and can adapt to some widely different material.
