I currently have a bunch of Daking pres and 4 CAPI VP28's (coming soon). I'm looking to pull the trigger on two channels of Neve style pres with EQ, or perhaps a full channel strip. Rack mount preferred. I've been looking into some of the obvious contenders. BAE is a little spendy per channel so I'm leaning more towards Vintech, Heritage, etc. These will be part of my rig for tracking live drums. I'd love to hear any firsthand advice if you've owned or own some pieces I should consider. Thanks

AML ez1073...oh so good on drums (and just about everything else). And they compliment vp28’s well (I own both).

Using it for drum room mics now, but sat on my overheads for a couple years. Nice unit for a fair price.

I haven't used the GAP pre73 personally but one of my good buddies owns a pretty hoppin' studio here in town and is always trying to push them on me. "Cheapest piece of gear on the rack but it makes it on every project" type thing to hear it from him.
Again, no personal experience with them though. Maybe worth looking at.

I have not tried it, but I would be checking out the Heritage Brit Strip. I believe it includes a pre, DI, eq and compressor. I have the 73eq jrs and they are fantastic. I also have the ha-609a which is fantastic, but I think think they use the compressor from the successor. I do not like to give advice on something I have not used. But if you can check it out on a trial basis, it may be the way to go. heritageaudio.net/catalogue/britstrip/Good luck!!!!

I need EQ - I have plenty of straight pre channels. Looks to be a great deal though.

That Alctron the svart posted a link to is most likely about the same thing as a Gap Pre73 and EQ73, fwiw. Probably rolling off the same factory line.

If Heritage were available many years ago when I bought these, I may have gone that direction. But I've never regretted buying the Vintech's, solid as a rock.

You don't mention budget, but I have the Wa273eq, if you have never demoed it, I'd recommend it for your consideration.

Are there any people who do builds of the AML stuff like there are for CAPI? The ones I’m referring to are prebuilt 500 series. I think the diy kits are rack kits...but I could be wrong. Either way, yes you can pick up a pair prebuilt, I think I got mine from Front End Audio.

Have you had a chance to try these, Svart? If so, what are your thoughts?

Have you had a chance to try these, Svart? If so, what are your thoughts? I have the 500 alctron version of the 1073 preamp. No eq on this one. They compare favorably to my high end clones. They sound like neves and although I'm sure someone would argue small sonic differences, I don't think they're any different than any clone to another.

I do have one channel of a Neve type channel and it's a Heritage 1073/500. I love to get more but I'd need a new rack as I am out of slots and then it stop making as much sense. I have been looking at the Heritage HA73EQX2- looks to be somewhat close to the Warm unit you have.

I have read lots of good stuff about the AML. I wish there were people who did AML builds for hire like there are for CAPI. I have Billy Pratt at Audibility making some more CAPI stuff right now

I've got a handful of RND Shelfords (5052's) and Porticos (5012, 5032) in a 5088 console, and they're quite nice. Used on all manner of things.
I use a Great River MP2NV a lot, too...for vocals, acoustic and electric guitars.
The latest of this ilk that I've really been enjoying is the Phoenix Ascent Two. It's remarkable on electric guitars.

The RND line is super high quality.
I used to have an Aurora Audio GTQ2 and it was a great piece as well. The EQ isn't extensive, but it sounds great.

I pulled the trigger on a pair of BAE 1084's. I figure I will have them for a long long time and if they ever need service I am local to them.

Good choice. It’s sort of like choosing a guitar... my buddy bought a brand new $10k strat a few years back! and I couldn’t believe it, he could have gotten so many vintage deals. And now that I’ve played it quite a few times.. I can’t say there’s any sign of cheapness nor lack of mind blowing awesomeness. It just always delivers. The BAEs I used didn’t disappoint in a similar way.
