I will start off what I hope is great resource for those of us using SD3. This is my basic tracking preset. It is based off the basic SD3 (no expansions) and is a variation of the Seventy Seven preset. Track 1 within the preset, is the basic groove of kick on 1 + 3, Snare on 2 + 4, and 1/8 note hi hats. I track against this, and basically adjust the kick pattern if needed. Wiz Basic SD3 Tracking Preset

Heheh. Sorry, I just don’t really use presets in SD3. I do save the kits I use frequently with the individual mics routed to fit my PT template drum tracks so everything is always routed and ready, but I don’t use any of the internal SD3 processing so my ‘presets’ would just be routing.

Thanks, Wiz, I'll check it out right now. Here's my default kit: www.dropbox.com/s/wr6o6gwbmfccq7e/DAN%20RADIOHEAD%20kit%20NO%20AMBIENCE.sd3p?dl=0I call it the "Radiohead kit." I guess it kind of does that thing. More importantly, it's the only decent sounding kit I could come up with out of all the stock components in the basic core library. I find, this set is easy to mix and doesn't take a lot of extra work. A lot of the other SD3 presets take a TON of massaging and fixing to get them to sit in the mix. The only thing I haven't done to this kit yet is fix the tom panning, you might want to do that, they are very wide right now. My typical mix channel in Cubase is this: Lindell 50 "API console" Waves API 2500 compressor Softube Tape You can subsitute the console with Console N, UAD 1073, etc, for different sounds.

Hey Wiz, I just had a play of your drum set, pretty damn nice. Has this kind of upper mid thing and it's pretty controlled sounding, I like it thanks for sharing.
The kit I posted also has a 20" kick drum. For some reason the larger kicks in SD3 sound stupidly, cartoon huge to me, not so all purpose. So I stick to the smaller ones.

Hey bud thanks for participating, cool sound. Can I suggest you record some midi into SD3, on Track 1, so people can hear the kit in context with your velocities... the velocities have so much to do with the sound. Also, then by looking at the midi in SD3's grid editor, we can learn some tricks from each other... Thanks for participating mate Cheers Wiz

If you load the .sd3p file (preset) into your DAW it will have all you need, It has a basic midi file on TRACK1 in SD3, that is my basic tracking (replacing the metronome click) file, that has the velocities set for that drum kit I use to track against. I just exported a project file from SD3 and it had no more or less info than the preset. So if you just play a basic groove like my tracking groove, and hit each drum in context, play some fills, ride section, closed hats, slightly open... just like you would in a song.. then I can look at things like the velocities the TD25 generates, cc4 info, etc, how the hi hat is set up. Cheers Wiz

When I had my KV-25 kit Superior 3 wasn’t out and I didn’t care for the feel, so I went back to real drums and mics. I was bummed, sold the KV-25 kit. Now I want to get it again by what I’m hearing about easy setup and works great! Ugh

I need to learn SD3 on a deeper level. Problem is I don’t have an e-kit. Also, I don’t play drums...
But, I do use midi and the replacement. Actually just yesterday I imported a stabbing synth from a demo track and triggered some toms off it.

I finished another kit today but I'm not sure if it's ready to share, it's pre-mixed inside the mixer and uses some samples from my hard drive.
The trick I used was to finish a track, using regular plugins, then go back inside Superior Drummer mixer window and "re-create" the drum mix with the SD3 plugins. Worked out pretty well. Now I can load this kit, pre-mixed, into any future song. That seems to be the "deal" with me for these SD kits, to have them "ready."
I learned that the "classic compressor" is terrible and ruins your drums. But the 1176 and the Fairchild are both good. Both the EQ's are good. Tape and transient are good. That's about all you need for a drum mix anyway.
My SD3 mix came out possibly better than my Cubase mix somehow, so that shows that the inbuilt plugs should be pretty decent.

Don’t know if you remember, but I started a subforum for this…and it got about five responses.

We’ll have to revive the subforum thanks to Wiz. I’m more and more just doing midi because I don’t do crazy drumbeats anyway when I’m writing, just a timing thing. I still prefer mic’d up kits, but I’m sure the newer SD3 sounds and reacts(dynamics and feel)) better than SD2. what libraries?

Most of my favs are other libraries. What libraries have you been digging lately, John? Honestly, I haven’t really used it a bunch lately…it’s been all real drums and less home stuff. But I still really dig the Bob Rock stuff - one or two of the kits. There’s a Nashville Something or another preset that’s great when it’s tweaked a little. I really like the less roomy Hansa stuff the live room one really really sound like a real kit. And the vocal booth is killer thumpy dry stuff. There are things I like in the Allaire or Hit Factory ones - might be a little in both. I really like stuff in The Classic and Southern Soul one. Decades is Cool, but I find myself only using one or two of the kits. The 70s soul kit is pretty cool. Indipendent is cool but I don’t think it sonically sounds as good as some of the others.

Here's a little EQ treatment shootout. on Wiz's drums. www.dropbox.com/sh/ed08m73cz2y41wy/AABaIx3YVT8WM7QwkoysAZika?dl=0I purposely boosted the tops too far to see how the different EQ's hold together with about 6 dB of top boost. Three are very similar and one is very different. You can hear SSL Native X-EQ2, Toneboosters EQ4 (that I talk about a lot), Softube Weiss EQ MP And the one that is very different is iZotope Nectar 3 Plus, and the Neoverb reverb from izope that I just got today. I made it crunchy and gated with a lot of plate reverb sound. really enjoying these softwares EDIT: I've done a little bit of matching but it's a very imperfect test. LUFS matching within about .1 LUFS for loudness on the main three clips. EQ curves don't necessarily exactly match either, but they should be relatively close.

Interesting as they all sound different... I like the SSL and Weiss... Turn off the CC4 in SD3.. Double click on the TRACK in SD3 and select GRID EDITOR. Look on the left about two thirds down, and you will see under the RIDE a box labelled VELOCITY click that and select Hi Hat pedal cc control (CC4) and then turn off ENABLE CURVE.... that ignores the CC4 messages from when I tracked it.. which is how this song should be, sometimes I use it, some times I dont....that will take care of the weird HI HAT opening stuff going on. **** I am interested , when you loaded the project was that CC4 disabled? Wondering about the save state of the project. Cheers Wiz
