I'm considering trading my Faderport (new model) for a FP16. Not straight up, of course, but there's a guy in my hometown selling what appears to be a mint FP16 for $750 who is also in the market for the Faderport. I think I could probably do the swap and kick in $600 and get it done.
I'm interested in the 16 because I do actually do a lot of mixing both of my own stuff and occasionally getting some outside work. But I'm hesitant because the compact little FP has a lot of charm and I use it a lot.
Some facts...
- DAW is Logic
- I do have room for FP16 in a keyboard drawer in my desk but it would bump my iPad (which I use for plugin control via Sidecar) to the actual desk. Not a big deal but worth thinking about.
- This is a home studio, mobility not a big factor or need
So, has anyone done this upgrade? Did you miss the compact little FP? Or were the 16 faders just the workflow improvement you needed?
(PS... first post on this forum. Stayed up until like 3am last night reading threads. What is this place? Intelligent conversations? Respectful disagreements? People taking the time to help each other instead of snarky remarks like "RTFM" or "LMGTFY"? Where have you guys been all my life?)

Welcome to RGO! A really great place, for all the reasons you mentioned. I love my little FP, especially for writing automation. If I ever get to do more mixing for outside clients, I would expand. An FP16 would be at the top of my list.

I had all 3 but fp1 not the second version . If you like the FP 1 in logic and you want more channels $6-700 in good condition would be a very good deal. I’d say go for it as long as you can co firm it is working. And welcome !

I think my big fear is that I hate buying things I won't use, and I've got a nice thing going with the FP1. However, I'm using Logic Remote for multi-fader moves a LOT and, while it's really cool (especially if I'm stuck behind a drum kit or something), it sure would be nice to have a bank of actual faders. I'm also interested in the VCA and Bus views (like everyone else in the world I'm worshipping at the Michael Brauer altar... I know, how original), appears these actually work in Logic but one never knows.

My fp1 fell off my desk and damaged its USB port, powers up but doesn’t work.
If you can get it for $6-7 low risk, if it’s clean, easy to flip ?

Nice to have you around here. Every time I've looked at the FP16 (which is a number of times), I've gotten hung up on it not having dedicated pan knobs for each channel. Just seems crazy to me - that's one of the things I would want to use two hands to experiment with different pannings for various tracks. If that's not something that would bother you, I say give it a shot.

For me, I find the encoder to be a little too slow on the FP1 for panning so I'm still panning with the mouse. But yeah, dedicated pan knobs makes a ton of sense. If I could, I would definitely use those. At least there is a dedicated pan knob (for selected tracks) instead of the main encoder, that's an improvement.

Good point, probably fairly easy to flip here in Austin. Have you used the MIDI mode features that were recently added? This wouldn't be a "need" for me but if they are actually useful, worth considering. Seems like something that people might set up once because it's "cool" but then determine that it's not actually that helpful.

Note to anyone following the thread... I just finished reading the user manual and, although there aren't individual pan knobs, you can switch the faders into pan mode with one dedicated button and approximate the same functionality that way. Also, looks like the plugin editor button actually works in Logic, another plus.
I'm running out of reasons to not buy this thing. As someone else said, if I miss that compact little FP1 I can always flip this back.

I had the original FaderPort and it never worked correctly for me in Logic. It was a nightmare of firmware updates and Presonus support was horrible to deal with. I swore off Presonus because of that. I got a Behringer X-Touch and it was pretty good. I now have the X-Touch One because the big one is being repaired (encoder scroll wheel started to fail). Having 8 VCA permanently on the X-Touch is really cool. If the firmware is correct, they all work the same, since they are emulating a Mackie Control. So, please report about the FP16 and Logic if you decide to get it

I upgrades a FP1 to FP16.
Was about to write a long text about my experience, but:
First owned FP1 then FP16. Ended up selling them all because the console type workflow were more of a hinderance than a enhancer to me. I work much more effectively and efficiently with a keyboard and mouse and a daw.
Probably because that's where I first learned.
Hope this helps.

The new one does work well in logic, works best in studio one.
It does have a pan pot, just one but you can use it in each channel or the faders as described above.
The new pan pot is better than the old.
Every controller has a learning curve , the banking over 16 channels is cool and after you touch a FP channel it highlights in your monitor, so you can listen to panning, see it on your monitor and the relative position , if I recall, correctly, is shown in each fp channel’s display ?

I have an Avid Artist Mix with 8 faders that sits on my desk, unused. Womp womp. This is why I avoided the larger controllers a year or so ago when I got the FP1. But based on how often I use the FP1 (always), I'm thinking I'm probably safe here. But your experience is EXACTLY what I want to avoid. I'm currently waiting to hear back from the seller on my "trade" offer, if I get this thing I will surely be reporting back on my experiences.

Welcome as other said.
I had a FP8. I really TRIED to dig it as I was all about speeding up production. In the end, I sold it. The greatest reason is 2nd pass automation - touch or latch - pain in the butt. I discovered that mousing with nodes in SO5 is super fast and the FP8's weirdness made it a no brainer to sell.

That's because you haven't moved to Texas yet like the rest of us. C'mon down, the weather's fine! (Actually, not right now, the weather is most certainly not fine.)

Good luck brother!

Deal update... we settled on $600 plus my FP1 for the FP16 pending an in-person meet to check out the goods and make sure they function. How can I not?
Although I do feel like I'm saying goodbye to an old friend. That FP1 never did anything wrong, it's not its fault that it only has one fader. Poor little guy.
