Does the Manley Slam have that same specific color of the vari-mu thats being mentioned here or is it only on the Vari-Mu? Anyone know? Another record I love had the Manley Slam on it, if the inherent color is across the line of the Manleys and present on this record as well I'm pretty confident I like this color..

I think the slam is opto and fet. No vari mu stuff going on in that one.

And FWIW I actually like the standard Drawmer 1960. Never used it across the 2 mix but I dig 'em for tracking. Same. Mine lives on bass. One side for a countryman 85 DI, the other for a Neumann 47FET on cabinet. The built-in DI isn't bad either.

Just a quick heads-up: A KILLER rock producer named Beau Burchell has an IGS Tube Core 3U Mastering Edition for sale right now. It's listed in his instagram story. I think you could throw a message into his instagram DMs to grab it from him. www.instagram.com/beauburchell/

I've been searching this thread topic online for clips & info and am drawn to the gloss and dimension I seem to hear from the Tubecore 3U so far and I'm guessing it's price for performance compared to the cost of other 2 channel vari mu's is hard to beat. But I also came across this one I thought I'd share to the thread, the Rockruepel Comp Two. At 5.5k USD though it costs more than Tubecore's 3k for the 3U

Mike sent me a PM about this, so I thought I’d post my reply here too: Mike, I ended up getting a VCL Varis. I listened to several clips from a big bus compression shootout (I think it was over at Gearspace), and thought the VCL and Tubecore 3U had the most pleasing boxtone to my ears. Ultimately, I ended up getting the VCL because I found a great deal on one.
I don't regret getting the VCL, but I still have the urge to see what the TUBECORE 3U would sound like on my mix projects. While both units colored the signal in a similar polished way, their compression characteristics are very different. The Tubecores can be really fast, while the VCL is much slower.
I love the Tubecore 500 for tracking vocals and squashing drum mics/bus. I would think the 3U would be a versatile tool for mixing and tracking.
An addendum to my PM is I’d say he VCL’s compression behavior is closer to a Manley Vari-Mu. If I worked on more acoustic music, I probably would have bought the Manley, but since I mostly work in pop and rock, I thought the VCL had a more suitable tone.

I quite like my Tubecore. Just recalibrated it and new tubes. Its better than ever.
That said, for me, my dream tube comp now is the Magic Death Eye stereo. I'd love to have one. But the cost will probably keep me from that realistically. (and the fact they are hard to get). Love the plugin though for now.

Which tubes did you put in and do you remember about how many hours you got out of the last set ? .....Thanks,

I don't know the hours because I bought it used. It was a unit from 2014 though. I just bought a set from IGS directly of their standard 6N1P tubes. Next go around I want to get some PCC88 per Bowies recommendation and will get them from him.

From reading about the Tubecore I thought you could choose between: 6N1P tubes for “standard” IGS compression, 6BC8 for a tight, transparent, punchy compression, or choose 6386 tube compression, or 5670 for a deep and dark tube compression. I didn't know the Tubecore 3U can take a PCC88 Tube. Which direction is the PCC88 supposed to take the Tubecore sonically?

I have all of them, but the 6386 tubes I have I can't calibrate to match L/R. And haven't tried the 5670s as I don't want that kind of effect out of the unit for my case. I can't answer the last question as I am not a Tube nerd or know it all. bowie could answer this question likely though. He is the one that originally suggested trying them as a sub for 6N1P tubes to me.

I'm a big fan of the tubecores, specifically the 500 series actually. I agree the tubes in there can make a big difference. When I ordered additional channels, I was worried when I got them because they sounded so different.... I had thought the design had actually changed (for the worse). But once I swapped out the stock tubes, the sound came back.
I wouldn't use anyone else's recommendations on tubes, but just try a few difference ones out there and see what suits your taste.

Wondering if anyone who has tried both the Tubecore 3U 19" and the Tubecore 500 series, can describe how similar or different they sound from each other w stock tubes?

The only major factor there is the power of the PSU for the 500 unit needs to be robust. If you have a weak one, it'll suffer.
I haven't used it, but have read about it and IGS even talks about it which is why they make their own chassis too. Pretty common issue with Tube devices in 500 series stuff.
Otherwise Id imagine they are pretty close to the same.

It been a while, but I think the 500 series has a bit more character, in the sense seemed to be able push them a bit more. I actually preferred the sound for my tastes, some may disagree.

Thanks for your info... on the IGS web site I think it says they use JJ's for the 500 unit and NOS tubes for the 3U rack version. Are you saying you swapped tubes in the 500 unit or the rack 3u version? I know tube swaps are available in the larger rack 3u version but don't know if it's possible to swap tubes in the Tubecore 500 version or not? when did you get your 2nd additional channel (500?) that sounded different at first before you swapped the tube, recently or several years ago? Thanks, Mike

Thanks, Mike Any unit with a tube in it is swappable....unless they somehow have soldered it directly to the board or wired it up, which would be quite rare. I tried a few different flavors of the JJ tubes and sounded great to me. I actually was up my 6th channel of IGS vari mu compression at one point...that was pretty extreme GAS, back down to only 4 now. They are cool on the stereo bus, but borderline un-professional to use them that way (500 series). I'd only do it for my own projects or friends. Otherwise Id prob use something a bit more up for the job like the 3U version or a Therm Phoenix.

I just got my tube-core's today, paid an extra $100.00 for a matched pair that could be used as a mastering comp. I had the 3U version so it'll be interested to see the differences.. From what I've heard there's not much in it vs. the rackmount but anyway I'll do some experiments over the next week or so.

I've read that IGS started making their own custom transformers in the tubecore last year after supply chain issues and the reviews since then is that they were were as good if not slightly better. I've been considering the tubecore units, so I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on why you decided to move on from the 3U version and how the 500's compare sonically if and when you have the time. Thanks, Mike

I like it to all be reachable in front of me via my desk..

trade off is of course you get stepped Elmas in the 3U and its just potentiometers in the 500. Which makes stereo mastering and recall not reliable.

Actually no, in my version of the 500 whatever channel has the most compression acts as master and controls the other unit. Unless I remove the link of course and use them dual mono.

Ah so that is still a big difference. Thats a linked sidechain where the 3u is a dual mono unit the whole time. Plus youre in/out would still be independent controls, or should anyways.
