I had some of the Type 69 500 series modules from Arny. Bought from VK. They sounded trashy and distorted easily with little headroom. It was not engineered well with a proper output section. I sold them. Then, a few years later, Arny died and these modules have not been available for a few years. Their rarity is part of the myth. These new modules sounded good in the video demo. Big push happening from the Vintage King.

Big push happening from the Vintage King. Don’t know how much headroom the original ones had...I think part of the issue with the Arny ones was the choice to remain true to “pulling a unit out of the console.” They only had the output transformers further down the line in the console, so they didn’t put one in the reissue modules...so you had to make up output gain with a compressor. But I wonder how much of that headroom issue is just the sound of that lustraphone input transformer. That distortion - that sounds more like ugly clipping - was just how it sounded. The Arny ones were persnickety - but if you had the input correct and made up the volume with a compressor on the back end, it was really an open, natural sounding pre that didn’t sound like others. Little more pushed in the low mids, dipped in the 1-3khz and a beautiful top end. And the eq points are great in the midrange and top. Bottom leaves a bit to be desired. I’m hoping these new ones address some of those issues.

I don’t know which desk y’all are referring to, but the Musicland console doesn’t have any output transformers. I have been told none did, originally. The sum amp is basically the same as the mic pre, just with a little different compensation. They ran internally at low level, around 0 dBu. The distortion comes on so early because the first transistor in the amplifier is biased “wrong.” It’s actually extremely similar to the preamps in the early Trident desks - the A range. Those are “right” but they sound different.

If used within their headroom limits, the Helios Type 69 modules sound GREAT~! And as John stated previously, if followed by another amplifier, like Capi's Missing Link, and or a Compressor / Limiter, which is the route I took for each of my 16 channels. They sound simply beautiful, and are wonderful.
I mean look, no...actually listen to their history.
Back then, it wasn't Neve that wrote the book on early 70's British Rock n Roll, it was Helios!

All very intersting. Does anyone know the price of the Realios? I had 4 realios before I got 4 original Lutraphone 001 modules. the Realios were nice mic pres and had more output gain but kinda vanilla next to the real ones

I felt the synergy between the eq and pre were kind of the ticket to that sound. I always cranked the 2.8 or 3.5k. esp on guitars. I found it interesting the waves version even mimic'd the low bump when the eq was engaged.I compared directly with the real thing. I'm glad the H2's have a proper output stage. I'm told end of month for delivery. looking forward to checking them out
