Even when I was among the first 50 (or so) members at GS... I thought it would be better, to have a better long term name for that website. Despite being the "goofy guy" I am, I figured the shelf life of "Gearslutz" would be limited. A more welcoming name, will definitely have more broad appeal. Chris Lovely. More goddamn amateurs.

Well then I guess it's a good thing no one said anything about getting "really bent out of shape" about it. Ask yourself what the average response is if a dude goes out and gets laid vs the response if a woman does. The dude is a conqueror, the woman is the conquered. He's supposed to be proud, she's supposed to be ashamed. At least that's how it's been historically. Does the name of some gear website really matter? No. If the site decides to change their culturally-loaded name should John Eppstein be "offended" by it? Also no. I think we can all handle being big boys and ridding ourselves of a little d-baggery here and there without always having to pitch little entitled fits about it. PS I don't mean you specifically are "pitching a fit" in this case, just that dudes in general (I include myself) don't tend to take kindly to justified criticism. In my view it's very snowflake-y to not be able to handle the leveling of a playing field, whether a given issue matters very much or not. I don't really care if Jules decides to change the name of his site. What I DO care about is how "political correctness" is taking over and, for lack of a better word, "homogenizing" everything. It's like takling all the peppers out of Mexican food. Ok. And I see "political correctness" most often used as a catch-all boogeyman to avoid self-discipline and reflection. "What? That phrase ain't demeaning to ME, how dare you decide you aren't gonna use it. POLITICAL CORRECTNESS STRIKES AGAIN." <wipes tear> At the very least I think people should come up with a new boogeyman. The PC trope is so tired.

I "understand" both sides of this. You all get "likes"-so far . It ain't like Sony buying legendary MGM Studios, and re-naming it "Sony Studios". (Oh the horror) Chris

When you have a new generation of the entitled, who were rewarded for achieving nothing throughout their lives and who think the world revolves around them, then you get narrow minded perspective about essentially a joke about how important gear is to certain people,
Slutz, as a term is not sexist, as it could apply to any gender and anyone. While it started with a sexual connotation , I thought this became more generic, and applied to anything one felt particularly passionate about, and came to refer to someone going to great lengths to achieve something in life, for me it wasn't even a sexual connotation any longer.
I see the change of name as a victory for the dour entitled PC language zealots of the world, who have little perspective and desire less and whom have little sense of humour: the world/language can only be the way I define it: everyone else is wrong.

Maybe we run in very different circles, but I hardly believe "The PC Trope is so tired". Some of us practice self-discipline and reflection and oppose political correctness. IMO, when you elevate "Offensiveness" to such a level of importance that it trumps all other considerations everyone in society looses. (I'm saying you in the general sense, not you specifically) Judging things by such subjective standards, without any other consideration, creates a beast that is never satisfied because there is literally nothing that isn't offensive to someone.
And political correctness isn't about an individual deciding what speech they're going to use, its about telling other people what speech they cant use.
Now as for GS changing their name...I agree its not that important, one way or the other.

I think there's a lot of truth in what you're saying and I agree with it, at least abstractly. A parallel truth is that, often, decrying something as "political correctness" is a catch-all mechanism to dismiss and deflect critiques or ideas we don't want to deal with.

There are certainly times where the pursuit of "political correctness" gets out of control, but this is absolutely not one of them.
Imagine you're an out-of-shape guy who wants to start working out. You're a total rookie and the first website you come across is called "Fitness For Fatasses."
You might find it humorous. But for every person who finds it funny, I guarantee you there are 10 others who won't even give it a chance because it's a stupid fucking name that's off-putting and makes them feel shame or embarrassment for even clicking it.
And if "Fitness For Fatasses" just so happens to be the biggest, most visited fitness resource on the Internet, it could potentially deter tens of thousands of people from ever picking up a weight. All because of a juvenile, dumb name.

I'm torn on this one. I always thought the name was kind of dumb but I'm also really hoping that we can get to a place as a culture where we can understand nuance and have a sense of humor again.

Yep. Unfortunately, it usually takes some sort of War first. Then people take lesser things, less seriously. (paging Roaring 20's Jazz/Post WW II Rhythm and Blues/late 50's Rock and Roll/etc.) Chris

"Slut" has a lot of baggage. If you're a woman and you're in an already male-dominated field, I'm sure the name is a turn off. But also it's just a really dumb name. I've felt like a friggin' dork every time I've said it out loud. If you're a woman and you're serious about succeeding in a "male dominated field" and you get really bent out of shape by the name "Gearslutz" I seriously doubt that your career is going to go far. As I said, I'm not opposed to a name change - but I am somewhat offended by the intrusion of "political correctness" into our field. It ain't rock and roll.
Very well said. There is a great batch of people adjoining themselves to 'Generation Whine' and re-branded as 'Millenials' who wish to save all of us from ourselves and have made the phrase 'political correctness' revolting. There was nothing wrong with corrections, especially to words used in hate, but holy buddha, there's no need to burn the garden down just to do a little weeding.

Because if I look up fitness, I know that yes, I am in fact a fatass. If I look up recording, I see gear sluts, well I feel sorry for this bunch of folks that think recording gear gives them such joy so much they fall in and out of love with gear every week, using it to get their rocks off and move on. I mean it’s like a warning. A more equivalent fitness site name might be “SelfAbsorbedBodyWorshippers” Some other name ideas that convey the same kind of pattern: Gear addictz.... (shaming people with self control issues.. can’t use that) Gear junkies.... (this ignores the real epidemic out there on the streets) Gear Pimps.... (this reinforces male dominance over women) Gear Hoarders (Hoarding a severe mental illness, how terrible!) Gear Swappers (oh.. so now you have to reinforce poly lifestyles?)

Given that GS is the dominant force on the audio forum scene (well ahead of much better sites) I seriously doubt that anyone is being dissuaded..... And do we REALLY need more amateur AEs? I would vote no.

Let’s see one of the top 5 dealers in the world is a woman owned company? You think there might just be a little pressure if your chasing the advertising dollars? Nah no pressure at all.
