I would add another heavy duty vocal mic or another matched pair of LDC's. I'm really happy with my BeesNeez and it would be very different from your 87. A pair of 414's doesn't hurt to have on hand.

Yea Like mic's in pairs for sure! Wish I had the 87's in a pair, I wont buy a new surface mount version.... I was thinking possibly some 414's... which ones? ? I'll look into BeesNeez too thx. I don't know much about the different revisions of 414 or even which revisions I have used, but they are nice and versatile. My BeesNeez has a very full rich sound and isn't really Swiss army like. It's a custom revision from the producer series called Frank. Fat, tube tone.

Royer 121 pair if possible Telefunken M80 incredible on snare Telefunken M82 incredible on kick Senn MD421U5 - at least 3 for Tom tom, guitar amp and horn applications. I prefer new ones btw. Electro-Voice RE27 (or an RE20) voice over, male vox and BEAUTIFUL on kick that doesn't need as much point. Natural sounding. Gefell M930s - get a matched pair. Overheads, piano, stereo acoustic guitar, flute, violin, even vocal AKG 414 (EB preferred but the new 414xls is also fantastic) get a matched pair. So many uses. Neumann U89- IMHO, best damned mic ever for tenor and soprano vox, trumpt and choirs (including gang vocals) Neumann TLM102 (get 2 if you can afford it) IMHO Best mic I've found for ride, hats, percussion and fem backing vox. Also great alt for acoustic stringed instruments. [/size]

Ribbons Royer if you got the dough Might want to try a pair of Cascade Fathead mics that get good praise. I've had luck with a pair of cheapie APEX210 mics that I modded using the free floating online instructions. I re-ribboned them myself too, using some aluminum leaf. It's surprisingly easy.
Larger dynamics! Good one's are usually work horses useful for multiple tasks. Get a good sound with lots of rejection. So if you need isolation on a vocal. My current favourite for this is a Sennheiser MD441 THE BEST! I have one on a boom parked at my mix position for quickie one off vocals. With some generous EQ I can get it to sound close to my goto vocal mics, and the rejection is so good I don't worry about computer noise. SM7b was my fave for this until the 441 came along. Haven't tried the RE20 or the Heil PR40 but they are supposed to be great (especially the RE20)
Might want to look at the MD421 also. Although I like the 441 quite a bit more for things like vocals.
These mics are often used for vocals/kick/toms/guitar cab/bass cab/horns/Acoustic guitar, you name it really. Some are better suited than others for some of these tasks though.
Yeah some larger dynamic workhorse mics wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm such a fanboy of the MD441 I think it could be useful of pretty much anything. Get a pair if you got the dough.

I didn't even notice the lack of 421's. Great on tom's, sometimes guitar cabs, horns. RE20....kick drum, bass amp, acoustic bass, voice over.

So some AKG 414's (damn it, which version LOL) , Sennheiser MD441 's and some Sennheiser 421's sound like they would be useful on numerous sources, I guess Ill have to give in... Ribbons, I like my 160's a lot, man do they take eq well!!!! Love them tons. I was thinking eventually Coles 4038 not the Royer 121.... no ? RE20 for country kick too I hear? What about the Sure KSM32's What about the AT 4050's? For Female Vox, 251 or C12 type ?

Royer and Coles are both different to Beyers and to each other. RE20 is great for country, blues and rock kicks. I prefer the RE27 cause its a lot brighter... Well clearer. Snappier. More "point"!

you could try a couple of low end mics that perform very well on certain sources.
ev635a on mono overhead akg202 or uher 538 on heavy guitar, toms, jazz kick ksm137 on fender cabs beyer m201 on snare or bass cab
I agree with the other guys, r121 sounds different to m160. the royer has more bottom end to it so it's a fuller sounding mic. if I had the money i'd get the r122

I'd get a Royer 101 or 121. Or if you're looking for condensers I really like the little TLM102 but if not either of those I'm really wanting to try out the Miktek and Lauten mics.

AKG 414's for definite. I can't recommend a specific edition, but they're a fantastic mic.
EV635a's are great budget mics. I'm picking up my 2nd one tonight. If you're a Beatles man you might consider the AKG D130 - the Omni version of the famous D160. It's got a bright but very smooth top end. Compares favorably to my ECM8000's, the trade-off being smoothness to noise floor. No proximity effect, which means a nice linear low end to deal with.
One or two eccentric additions might be nice, depending what you're doing. Making a Telephone microphone (Yes, from a phone), a Shure Green Bullet or a Reslo ribbon might all be nice additions. Cheap ribbons in general are useful. Best use I found for my RM700's was a very skinny metal vocalist. A heap more low end, and a touch of varispeed and we "found" the macho man inside him. They're also cool on guitar or as overheads. Never dug them on my trumpet, though!

www.guage-usa.com been listening to these clips on their site. There's are a touch brighter and maybe a bit thinner sounding (at least the U87 one) but damn for the price, I'd say buy everything.

The MD441 is a great mic. Get one. Beyer M201 are great allrounders. Can not have enough of them. A Beta91 is a great modern kick sound mic that you wouldn't regret buying. Can save a lot of time. ...
