Hi, I'm looking to buy a vintage U87. There's one in my town that went through a recent check up but it has a weird hole on the diaphragm as you can see in the picture. I've seen quite a few U87s and don't ever recall seeing something like that, does anyone know why it's like that and if it'll affect the performance? Any help is greatly appreciated! Attachments:

Nothing like that on any of my mine. The only hole in a K87 diaphragm should be the center termination hole. In general, holes in the membrane are not a positive thing. Can I get a tskguy or timcampbell or cserrano in here please? Is @dbouchard here? Ben was here for a bit . . . mics?

I have a TLM 67 and an Ai here and I've owned a few vintage ones before and I've definitely never seen that so I'll pass, it's not like it was even very well priced. Cserrano sent me an MP saying that it definitely was not normal!

Well I don't think it is a hole. I think it lost a spot of gold which would be ok and won't really affect it. If it is a hole then that capsule will short out and needs to be re'diaphramed.

Thanks a lot! It was given a check and the A-ok by a local tech so I guess it works fine. I can test the mic for myself. Would this affect it in the long run? Obviously it'll probably affect it's resale value.

In the long run, if it loses more and more gold it would affect the capsule's output, making it noisier. It would take a lot of loss though. The amount of gold is not important (unless it is too thick) just it's conductivity.
