Very fun video.
Something seems a bit wider/more open/alive on the hardware 2254. The UAD is nice, too. I'd use them both.

Ya, I thought sonically , his real stuff had a little more oomph and mojo, but in a mix, you might prefer the UA , certainly both are excellent tools.

UAD is always 95% of the real thing.
But it always lack oomph (good buzzword) and depth.
In a mix these things does accumulates.

Unfortunately, if you want the best sound quality, you still have to pay the price. And for those of us that would rather not go broke to eek out 3-5% difference (noticeable in a mix?), thank goodness there are our plugins. |

No question high end OB is great but the cost differential, like that guy has $100,000s worth of gear in his rack and that is just one view, who knows what else he has vs like $10 grand with a new m1 computer, apollo and an ultimate package a huge cost differential, worth it to some, not all ? |

You can also get an AML clone or one of the new Heritage comps but this brings up another point which is the fact that these 3-5% difference discussions exist between hardware as well. I generally like hardware for it's sound when it comes to color but I could put several of these plugin bus comps on various busses if I wanted. They also get recalled instantly.
It also depends on your genre and clientele. Some of my projects would work with hardware but so many now require a lot of work with a bazillion tracks and recall of multiple versions bouncing between songs...
It's not as much of a no brainier anymore.

But yeah, I'm a enthusiast of plugins as well. And I do think that they work very well and give very fine results. |

It's an amazing time we live in. Those that can afford $8k for a stereo bus comp can get it, and those that can't can get 95% of the way there for $300.

IK and Sknote are lol. But some of the newer digital compressors have detectors just as good as analog but a vibe of their own |

For stuff like API, they’re all bad and could accurately model certain hardware and still sound bad, and Neve 1073 models, Just pick one and you can get in the parking lot of the ball park. the better ones are all just bad in different ways. UAD plugs tend have a digital modern sheen to them while others are just gritty or farty. I hate the sheen but a lot of people like it. UAD models many things where there is no native alternative or the native ones barely work. There are only a handful of modeled FET type plugs that don’t click (Overloud V2, PA Purple, PSP), only a couple of optical compressors that work (majority of them were coded by the same guy), and one Manley, The Pulsar, where the oversampling is dysfunctional and sidechain detector dysfunctional so it has a look ahead, which doesn’t improve the detector but just shifts it. The problem is UAD runs on sharc chips instead of modern CPUs so they can’t run as complex algorithms or detectors as the best native comps if you don’t want 90% of the way there to whatever popular hardware they model but not really there. |

Definitely very close and I guess in a mix situation you might make eq and balancing decisions depending on whatever you are hearing, plugin or hardware?
... says the guy selling HW to go ITB ... so I’m not biased at all :-D

I jumped back itb after a few years with OB, I do miss the OB mojo, but bought an x6, octo card and 10 plug deal , really with little or no reservations and really haven’t been disappointed.
Jumped right into final mixes for release of about 50 songs I had completed over last 5-8 years and over the last few weeks have uploaded 5 new albums to Bandcamp, with one more to go: just waiting on my son to finish front cover.
Very happy with my return to UA experience, so far, and from the OB sales I retired some debt.

Yeah, I have compared many many plugins. I have a bunch of UAD as my go-tos. But I have maybe the same amount or even a bit more of Native ones as my go-tos as well. They all lack the same thing compared to hardware, they are all 95% there to my ears. At the same time they all sound extremely good and have not stopped me from doing a great mix as far as I know. |

Maybe 5% at moderate settings but pushing for tone & using for color / creatively it’s anywhere from 10-25% especially when it comes to distortion, harmonics, & saturation. ( MB ITB thread w/ clipped Black Boxes & 9KJ’s )
