After living with the two units I built two or three years ago, I'm finally updating them and building new ones. They are very similar in size and design, but these will be finished out completely and making a few tweaks to both. Worked on them the entire holiday. Went with 1" (26mm) MDF for the main structural frames and using 1/4" (6mm) for the inset panels. Thought about going with thicker panels for the mass but the 26mm MDF weighs a ton and I didn't want these to get out of hand to where they're hard to move around. I lowered the footing of the desk to where I get a few more rack spaces below it and reduced the angle of the slanted uppers as well. Desk height remains the same but the reduced footing and angle will let it sit a bit lower, sort of like a mastering setup. The rack gets some adjustments as well and will be lower than the original. Leaving the middle divider without a panel so I can have better routing between the sides (I'm using some older Redco snakes with the patchbay that are 3' so any decrease in travel distance helps the tension). Also gaining 2U per side, going from 14 to 16 spaces. Excited about these updates to what have been really good workspaces for the past several years. Trying to decide now what color I want to paint them (they'll be sprayed to high quality). Need to decide that today because I'll start with the finish tonight.   .  .  .  .  . .  .   |

Otherwise, they'll get busted up and hauled off at some point. 28-space rack and almost the same desk, both unfinished and just a little different size-wise. The owner of the condo I lived in before the house we're in now took me to small claims court a year after I moved out because I pocked the sliding door on the patio (6x12') welding Abby Road gobos for my friend's studio. I had no idea I had done damage, but certainly understood how it happened. (Ended up making 14 of the damn gobos, but that's another story.) Case got thrown out because she had actually sold the unit by the time we got to court and I had paid rent for three months after I moved out early. I guess that's another long ass story. Anyway, I get the limited space issue. You gotta make things work though when you need something done, right?! |

Got them primed this evening. Shit, painting is tedious. I don't know how people do it for a living, but I respect those who do. I imagine it's a lot like miking up a full drum kit. My room is so brown/wood that I picked a cool Neve-ish blue semi-gloss that I think will be an inspirational pop when I'm in here. Used the Sherwin Williams app and it did a decent job with the color representation (can't complain - better than swatch guessing).  .  |

Loving this color. Got two coats on today. In tribute to Wedding Crashers' Todd, I'm calling it Neve and Tron, because it's sexual and violent!  .  Thinking I'm gonna do two more coats, at minimum. They're going to grow roots, might as well make them right before planting. |

It's similar in shape to what I have now, so I compared there and then tweaked the size here and there. Just drew it out and kind of went for it. I've used SketchUp years ago but every time I don't use it for many months getting back into it requires a Masters Degree. Just tedious as hell. Most of the stuff I do I draw out in a little pad I've got. Stuff I've done for other people I just use Adobe Illustrator. Yes on the finishing! Worst part. Always brings me down when the sanding starts. Painting got a bit more fun once I got the hang of the spray gun ritual. But still, my least favorite stage. Edit: I also switched over to metric a few years ago. I find it much more convenient. |

Getting there on install. Man, cabling takes a bit. Mislabeled a few things, so added effort to it. Loving the color and how it reflects on the gear. Going to be interesting to take some measurements of the room when it's all in place. The lower stance of the desk and 40mm increased width will definitely do something. Just hope it's not too different. Edit: With the increased width between the sides, gotta figure out the monitor arm. Liking the placement overall though.  .  |

Cabling / wiring is always hell. It seems so simple, until you end up with 1200 braided pairs and cable fatigue, and patch bay hell . . . and things out of sequence and nothing works from one tiny error. Or so I've heard...but I don't make mistakes . . .no, Never happened to me. LOL (only every single time).

Very nice! I got a Kreg pocket hole system for Christmas and when I get back to NJ will be building amp racks to hold various amp heads in reach and have the cabs on the other side of the room.
