Why do I still have this in my garage? While this was a definite upgrade from my Tascam 4-track cassette Portastudio, it was arguably a downgrade from my Akai MG1212 if not for the editing capabilities.

Ha! I still have an Akai 1214 with the rolling stand. I haven't turned it on in about 15 years. Did a lot of stuff on it back when.

The MG12XXs were pretty decent machines in their day. The only issue I had with mine was the periodic maintenance required to keep them from eating the (proprietary, looked like betamax but wasn't) tapes.
While these were 12 track recorders, we once used the sync channel as a desperation high hat track 13 and I still feel dirty.

I printed smpte and synced midi tracks on a MacPlus running Opcode Vision.

Oh Session 8, how I want to take each and every one of those things and throw it out the window and out onto Odana Road and watch the cars drive over them crushing them, Oh and our Digi Rep was pretty much in complete agreement!

I don't think many of them are threatening to record new crispy 16-bit audio files at this point.

The interface could be upgraded to a 888 if that says anything.

I still track on mine then dump it into Logic, because I am a masochist who has convinced himself it sounds good that way. That is an amazing story, though - you were able to get it loud enough to hear on the stereo bus or did you use the sync track output?

This was 30 years ago so I've long forgotten the details, but I didn't have any tracks left to bounce to so it was a total desperation move. I think we patched all the MG1212 outputs including the sync track output into a second 16-channel board for mixdown.

This is genius - I have no use for the sync track on mine but I do often lament having to use up an entire track for a click track and never even thought of this. I patch all the outputs into my interface and mix from there so this just might work if it's audible internally on the machine... muhahaha. Off to experiment tomorrow. By the way, these do sound pretty good with outboard pres, especially my Daking.
