4 sort of ok offers on my last piece of gear, so I’ll give credit to reverb for profile and traffic, wonder why they don’t frequent GS?

Hey, I had some stuff on GS for a few months; nada, so listed on Reverb yesterday, sold 3 things already, so that is great. But the reverb fees just never stop, and the CS explanation is so confusing, doesn't actually seem to make sense, like I was told the buyer pays the tax but I see a remittance charge in my invoice, selling fee payment processing fee xborder fee payout fee currency exchange Nice to sell but this was like 10-15% plus shipping costs, get this, they charge you a fee on the shipping cost, even though the service is provided by another company ? You had your stuff listed for a higher price on Reverb than GS right? That higher price that you're charging there usually ends up making the fees a wash. That said, Reverb is definitely tougher to deal with after their fee increase and adding sales tax to everything. I used to do a decent amount of buying low and flipping for some profit. With the fee increase and sales tax, deals are fewer and further between and trying to turn a profit when selling is not worth the hassle for the pittance you can generally make now. Between that and lack of time, I can't even sell the things I want to move, let alone trying to flip for profit anymore.

I got squeezed pretty hard when I sold my AC30HW a few weeks ago on Reverb. I remember back long enough when even eBay was a fun place to sell and buy. Even some of the bigger forums are squeezing sellers now too. There's no obvious answer other than the cycle of greed that eats up any good idea after some time.
Much sympathy to Bender for that DIY business story. I don't even bother building pedals for people that aren't friends because the "competition" is so cut throat, and of course the selling fees. I have no stomach for it. Won't even touch the pedal thing right now. Friends only. Last time I put up some vintage correct Russian Big Muffs I could hardly move them, pretty alarming.
I think finding the right product goes a pretty good distance. My Wolfboxes are doing pretty well for me, although yes, I am a super small time builder and I only put out 10 last year. But it makes so much more sense than a boutique guitar pedal. It's funny to me because everyone that knows me thinks, "He builds pedals." Which is cute, I guess people need something they can relate to.
There's a microphone manufacturer down the street from me that makes their living on it. I need to ask them about their selling strategies.

@jcoutu
When I posted I didn’t realize Reverb’s total fees had gone up so much, next time I will factor their fees into my pricing.
I sold my last item this morning , actually, a reasonable price, everything is shipped just waiting on last payment to my bank.
Thx for all the good advice: all’s well that ends well!

Blows my mind that folks will readily pay 40-60% of their incomes in state/local/federal/sales taxes but balk at rising fees on a site they can avoid My thinking too. Is something too expensive for my taste I simply avoid the platform. Sold all my old gear as local pick up on a platform 0% fee plus I made new friends👍🙏🤔

I wouldn't use Reverb or Ebay. I use the Pensadian Gear Exchange on Facebook, Facebook's Marketplace, Craigslist and occasionally Real Gear. So far Facebook and Pensado's run about equal in items sold, and Craigslst had one recent hit, but I basically post just in case, it's pretty dead now.
Think about it, on facebook you can practically vet the customer or the seller. You can see their page and get a feel for who they are, on Reverb, Craigslist, nothing.

There was a time when multiple feedback from repeat customers counted for something at ebay, and you could see the multiples related to customers, and the sales values. They closed that down to a single per customer and it knocked about 300 off my rating. No shit. It's not hard to get it right, no one does! There used to be an 'about me'; that got wiped too. The idea that FB vetting might somehow be better is laughable compared to what was and what ceased to exist.

Great advice.
To me eBay is dead for selling gear.
I only buy stuff there when the seller offers PayPal payment. As a buyer I have been screwed two times with direct money transfer - this leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
To me E-bay is one of those greedy big internet cooperations.
They lost every sense for a fair deal. Good for those who want to found a startup in this field.
BTW I am sitting alone in my condo. Merry X-Mas to all....

Agreed Martin, at least PP offers you some protection for the cost.
Let’s Skype tonight, if you like: kids are going to x’s for dinner: I’ll be cracking the red wine and kicking back!

^^This^^, made a big pot of chilli and bought some French stick. We are having an unseasonably warm and wet Christmas, currently Cavour +6 going to +13c by morning and 30-40 c of rain, would have been a hell of a snow storm if colder. I just cleaned my new giant tcr, was out riding yesterday, maybe, a Christmas ride is in the offing! Merry Christmas everyone!

I bought my Stam SA-2A and my Stam 1073MPA on eBay for a very reasonable price a couple years ago. Good things can still happen there.

Just sold a pair of monitors on Reverb for $1600. Received $1412.
I did use a “reverb bump” that added to their percent.
Shipping cost me $250 out of pocket.
I had the monitors for sale locally for 7 months at $1200 with no bites so in the end not too bad, but you definitely need to include abt 15% on reverb.

I think sellers will just have to increase prices as buyer’s can’t expect to low ball you and you lose 20-30% if you are not getting paid fairly for shipping too.

I think sellers will just have to increase prices as buyer’s can’t expect to low ball you and you lose 20-30% if you are not getting paid fairly for shipping too. This is what Reverbs new buyers are hoping everyone believes, they just don’t want to believe somebody else can build another reverb for what Reverb used to charge. These guys will of course point to all of their buyer and seller protections, but they never realize that in their niche how much more is sold with no fees because nobody has an acupuncture measure of how much is sold via all the no fee options. Yeah smart people are often really stupid.

10 years ago or so I had good luck selling stuff on forums and Craigslist. Nowadays, I list stuff substantially cheaper on Craigslist and forums and it still ends up selling for the higher price on Reverb. Not sure why people don’t look on Craigslist or forum classifieds any more.

Not sure why people don’t look on Craigslist or forum classifieds any more. My stuff listed at forums takes 1-2 years to sell, usually. Extreme example: I had a pair of Langevin AM-5116-B preamps in original trays on original shelf listed for.....nearly 10 years. Price was always under market....I raised it many times to keep it in the same relationship to ebay/etc. Finally moved this summer, word of mouth through someone else I know. Everyone wants these, or so they say....

Till GC bought it! They then turned it into an auction version of their used gear listings. I will admit to getting a API 560 for $350 though.
