I could have SWORN there was a D-Comp thread - but the search isn’t finding anything. Anyway...I bought one. Hooked it up today and I really, really liked it in the small time I got to spend with it...played around on Drumbus and in comparison to plugs, it added punch and control...seemed to add bottom end and also seemed to retain more of the center image. It doesn’t get as dirty as say - the Zener plug...but the Zener does start to get phasey and crap out destroying (which is a thing)... But what I was happy about is that the quality of the hardware compression is better. I actually really liked the comp setting, HPF at like above 100hz and input about 2-3 oclockish. Attack around 10 o’clock and Release fastest...really really nice. I’ll do a couple videos. Any requests? Can’t wait to try it on the master.

Would love to hear it on a drum bus 👍🏻 I often use the zener plug in there so I’m really curious to hear the D-Comp in action.

I’d love to have one of these too, haven’t gotten around to it yet. Can you do a vid of it just doing some minimal work on the main bus? And you’re right about the Zener - the plugin at least. I was going to buy it and was glad I didn’t after demoing it and realizing how bad the weird phasing is and how it can’t hold up when you really beat something into it like the 2500 does.

But let’s be clear, that as the moderator, he’d only be going there to keep the recording reprobates in line !

I always like to hear compressors on a lead vocal unless it's meant specifically for an application, like the SSL 2 bus compressor

I'm currently trying to figure out how I'm going to implement this in my workflow 2bus wise... Do you mean where in your 2bus chain, or things like how hard you'll hit it? Personally, I mix into the 2bus comp, if I add it later, it often is to weird for my little brain to handle.

john Kenn Are you trying to send a the whole mix bus into it or parallel into it w/ sub groups & print or what? What DAW ?

I’m trying to set up an insert (in Pro Tools) where I can basically put it in the insert slot and use it like a plug-in. I understand how to calculate it - figure out the delay in samples, then divide by the sample rate times 1000...that’s the milliseconds. But I can’t get it to work to save my life. I enter the values and then it does nothing. I don’t want to print and screw up my workflow...I’m over that. Takes too much time. Cubase does it automatically. Hopefully it’s coming in Luna soon.

Yeah even when my Apollo is in Pro Tools mode it prints HW inserts either before or after the sample accurate audio. Use to work perfect at 48kHz but ever since I got a client session in at 44.1 it’s been misaligned ever since & has eliminated HW inserts from client mixes To measure : Set session to samples in the top toolbar -> double click from bars : beats to samples. Send a click/ snare transient out & back in the insert or chain. Measure sample offset with the edit selection tool-> selecting the gap between the two files. The sample offset is in the main PT counter. ( black and green box. This sample offset will change w/ your sample rate so 48kHz may be more samples offset than 44.1 kHz. Once you get the sample values the session menu has I/O tab where the sample offset can be entered. It sucks for 2020 when most other DAW have fool proof ways but Avid does this to lock you into their interfaces/ HW which auto reports this to the SW. Apollo pro tools mode emulates this but isn’t 100% foolproof like an Omni/ HD I/o etc

I enter the values and then it does nothing. I don’t want to print and screw up my workflow...I’m over that. Takes too much time. Cubase does it automatically. Hopefully it’s coming in Luna soon. Try this instead. Add a stereo Aux track and call it Sub Master. Bus EVERTHING to this track directly. Can just highlight all your track and option + Shift click output, track, sub master(or whatever you want to name it. Then add all your bus processing including the insert of the 609 comp. Delay time doesn't matter now though. Then make a stereo audio track and call it Print. or whatever you want. i tend to call it Print_"whatever the tune name is" Select no input. Go back to the aux track you made as a sub master. Click on the output and go to track, select Print (or whatever you named it) Solo safe both tracks. Input monitor on the print track. Done. Monitor as normal. When you are ready to print, just record in the print track. All the inserts you add on the sub master will be captured in the printed audio. Then you can select the printed audio file. Cmd+shift+K and export clip as file. Select folder you want to send to and other settings. Done. this is how I print all my mixes. Im using HDX so I don't have the delay compensation issue you do but by doing it this way it become irrelevant. But only on the stereo bus. If you want to use things in the session on individual tracks you need to figure out your delay times.
