I have one of their modified Ampex 600’s. It’s crazy good. I’m sure these will be incredible! Congrats!

I went down an ampex rabbit hole last two years. got a mint 351-2 with full transport and a 350-3 with tele sync waiting to be picked up in the usa once the boarder opens from Canada. it's a journey lol... but i def don't wanna hack them up to just use as pre's so ec3 will be a nice addition for when i want something quick. Seems like a great company. can't wait to get test them out!

Been using the Coils to reamp tracks which sounds amazing, (I just reamped my bass track twice through the 70S and once through 286s, it totally brought it to life), but one of the most useful aspects of them is using them as essentially EQ's. -4,-2,,+2+4 in the 'Low' section while dialing in the NF makes for a very useful tone shaping and low frequency manipulation, many sonics options within just two knobs so you don't even have to think about it just listen and twist, pretty great to have that ability in just a preamp!

Have a 12AY7 in mine, with resistor change. An LA-2A and a Pultec are similar in that the amp can be anything. That's curious... normal tube substitution is a 12aT7 or 5751. but I can see the Y W or U working well. The 12 AT 7 works well because it keeps the tone but with the gain being 75% of an X, it can be a little cleaner when you want that (like 99.62% of the time) and the 5751 with 90% of an X keeps the crunch but a little less and adds a sweet glassiness over the top . . . you could say it makes it more similar to a CL1b when used VERY lightly - frequent users and owners like Jeremy G will know what I'm talking about here. Cheers!!

Cheers!! On the gain %, keep in mind those are theoretical #'s based on a the lightest possible infinite/no load (doesn't exist), so gain is actually much closer on any of these tubes than the % suggests. Whatever bit of lower gain is then less negative feedback in the loop (self-compensating), so it's a complex relationship. Less NFB in theory should mean higher harmonic distortion, but also a softer knee to that distortion, which might seem cleaner if pushed and with minimal compression setting. I'm tired now.....

Not to be “that guy” but I have a Mercury M72s Custom Shop Version for sale in the classified. I’ve used it on a lot of records, but my tracking studio is closed and working out of other studios I don’t really feel the need to bring outboard preamps with me (this ain’t the 90’s!)

For anyone who can answer, did the original green UA 610, the one in the desk, have a 12AX7 in it?
When I had the UA SOLO 610 I put a lower theoretical gain tube in V1, the next one down from 12AX7 whatever that was, and for some reason I was convinced that it sounded better, maybe less distortion, less wool.
My studio is almost completely solid state, at the moment, other than the Marshall amp, and the main microphones. There's a bunch of rare valuable tube amps in a pile over there too, and a tube spring reverb.
At some point, and I know who to ask, I'd like to tinker with some tube rack gear builds, and a guitar amp. Maybe a Silvertone 1484 clone or a simplified AC30.
