I've been through the usual studio workhorse suspects from AKG/AT/Shure/Beyer/Sennheiser over the years. Never tried anything over maybe $300 or so. I was on AT m50s for several years. They're pretty solid, though a bit exaggerated in the highs/lows. My go-to pair for the last few years has been the almost never talked about Sennheiser HD6 Mix. They are almost the perfect pair of cans to me. They don't do any of the hyping of highs and lows most cans do, just a lovely, flat, immersive soundstage. And they offer incredibly good isolation. That's why I originally got them, for tracking loud stuff. But I quickly fell in love with them for general use. Moving mics around while tracking acoustic or whatever, the flat response and strong isolation are so nice. The *one* complaint I have with them is they're not that comfortable for long use. Part of the reason they isolate so well is they're beefy and they fit tight. It's not uncomfortable at first but after some extended use, you feel the squeeze. It's totally fine for me, they're strictly for tracking and mix checking. I'm not wearing them for hours and hours. They also come with a really nice case, beefy disconnect-able cables (one coily and one straight) and a couple different types of earpads. I don't know if Senn still makes them, I almost never hear about them but I've been really impressed with them. Given your suggestion, I'm really interested in these, Ragan. However, they seem barely exist here in the stores. It's almost like they are being discontinued.
How is their durability?

They’re the most rugged cans I’ve had. But yeah, hardly ever talked about and hardly available, apparently. Oh and I forgot, the cable can connect to either left or right ear, with a little twist lock. Great feature.

As advertised, extremely good isolation but mine sounded really mediocre, and that might even be charitable. This was a common complaint though and at some point they upgraded the drivers.

Anyone used the EX-29’s? It would be nice to not have to worry about click bleed. They lack detail and will make your ears hurt after a little while. The new drivers in the 25's were much better, but I did not change out the drivers in my 29's. They also require a lot of power to drive correctly. Great for drummers though!

I was going to recommend the Sony 7520's but saw they've been discontinued. Nothing like the 7506's, much more pleasant to work with. I also like the Sennheiser HD 25-1 11's I have left over from my location sound days, the low end is a bit exaggerated but the isolation is great and they're a good tool when tracking in one room situations.

I'd say in the $300 price range the Audeze LCD 1 will be pretty hard to beat. It outperforms headphones at much higher price points.
The main issue for almost all Audeze products is some people love their comfort and others hate 'em. At least these are their lightest pair suitable for mixing/mastering. I know a mastering engineer who uses them.

What headphone amps / interface do you connect your headphones to while mixing? The sound is going to be very different for a headphone connected to different headphone amps due to impedance matching/mismatching - at least i am going through this issue right now when i changed my interface! I used to do ITB mixing in Macbook and ATHM50x used to translate the mixes well to other phones/speakers. But with the new interface headphone amps, i cant mix with ATHM50x - they are very shrill!

I use the headphone amp that is built inside my Drawmer MC2.1. It's loud and clear, handles any of my "demanding" cans just fine.

I am looking at new headphones for mixing/DIY mastering. As monitors I have Focal Alpha 65. I am looking at Audeze LCD-1, Focal Listen and Sennheiser HD650/600. Unfortunately I can't find them in the shops, so checking them out side by side is not possible.
I am using Yamaha hph-mt7 right now for checking mixes, but they are bass heavy. I will keep them for tracking duties as they isolate sound rather well. I am looking for something more flat and analytical/neutral. Any suggestions? The budget is <500 Euro. So yeah, I am looking to step up from the Yamaha, but not looking to step into pro >1000 Euro level.

Nice thing I’m using them everyday w/my phone, and I can’t hear a word my wife says! For headphone amp, Rolls RA62 gets the job done well, sounds incredible direct from analog. Seriously. All headphone/ through the RA62 seem a little less ‘brilliant/shrill’ up top than a direct RME hp out. I switch between both for critical listens, stay on the amp for fun.

Slate VSX (drops mic) (Kidding kidding) Seriously, anyone here tried the VSX out? Reviews are insanely strong (just got an email with raves), but so is Steven's PR. I'm not a fan of the plugins (I own several but grew to dislike what they were doing). The idea appeals to me of being able to switch from my room mix to virtual room to boombox, etc. quickly. I do love his promo videos though. His over-the-top kinda vibe I think is very entertaining. Like Pedro - "If you vote for me, all of your wildest dreams will come true."

I've found the Senn 600's pleasant to mix on and have great translation results with them. Other headphones I use are DT770 and ATX M50, but don't like them for mixing purposes--better for tracking.
