Yeh I was working on an track the other day in the studio....and I came to a complete standstill. If only my Mac Pro was smaller I could finish recording the part and it would be a Killer song! Wait what? Lol. Why is a smaller Mac Pro needed? I totally agree something cheaper / less video oriented / etc would be great... but not sure I understand how a rumor about a smaller Mac Pro means would be good for us? But hey it could be.Because it’s potentially less expensive than the bigger Mac Pro which has some stuff that mostly video guys need, while still beeing more powerful than the Mini, which is a bit to lame for many big audio productions and not expandable at all. My guess is that they are keeping the Mini much less powerful than it could be, just to keep the Mac Pro sales, and potentially having a niche for a smaller Mac Pro. It does makes sense I think. But..just guessing of course.

Agreed, either Apple will release 2-3 new minis or have option for m2 chips , more ram or a new more music oriented Mac Pro same m2, more ram, maybe better video too, but not aimed at the pro video client.
And a new iMac as well, m1 or more, expandable ram, 5k monitor?

Video is the big market for Mac desktops. It's like audio and graphics were for Mac in the '90s. Single-core real-time DSP calculation is the important spec but it's almost always missing. The most cited specs relate to how fast bounces can be done.

But..just guessing of course. Hope so. Although I feel like with Apple I am constantly disappointed the past 6-7 years. Personally I fall into the opposite camp of their target consumer. I want my computers/laptops big, so I can actually service them and keep them updated throughout their 7-10 year lifespan (when dropping 2.5k+ on a computer) And I actually want my phone smaller...so I can fit the damn thing in my pocket. iPhone 5 was best form IMO. Plus all that is on the phone is people complaining and other mindless garbage lol.

And yeah, a pocket sized phone is better. I went from the 4S to the 6 to the 8, liked it at first and now think the 4S was the best phone I ever had.

I can’t find the article I read this AM about the M1 and Cinebench a more video editing like benchmark where the M1 had some pretty jaw dropping numbers. It almost seams like Apple is handicapping the new machines with the limited RAM till they sell through all the intel stock and have a full ARM equipped line.

very positive mac mini reviews coming out. I think I'm going to order one.... my 2012 is getting a little long in the tooth.

Really comes down to if the 16g of the new ram is not limiting?

Really comes down to if the 16g of the new ram is not limiting? think that'll be a personal thing. If you aren't using a ton of VI's it won't matter. But at the same time if you're using SSD to hold your VI stuff you'd probably be fine as well since they are so fast and just increasing disk space allocation for session use.

I suppose I'll be waiting at least until UA supports Big Sur. Anyone have any idea of how quick they've been to update for new MacOS versions in the past?

good to know... it may be time to switch back to RME, who (as usual) had Big Sur drivers ready 2 months before it was released to the public.

Is this all via Rosetta?
Maybe mixing and working fluently in a third party DAW is possibly via Rosetta? That'd be pretty great...

looks promising!
But still no sane person would make that move yet. Be another year or so before I would.

I believe Russ is doing this just to check the art of the possible, and yes I think it’s all in Rossetta, so non Rosetta performance would be even better.
