OK, everybody. I managed to get Katrina and Søren out of the house for about 45 mins last night - just long enough to lay down bits of a few tracks. This was one-take stuff with no warmup, so it was quick and dirty. soundcloud.com/markwilliams/sets/stam-sa-67-vs-soyuz-su-017fethttps://soundcloud.com/markwilliams/sets/stam-sa-67-vs-soyuz-su-017fet https%3A//soundcloud.com/markwilliams/sets/stam-sa-67-vs-soyuz-su-017fethttps%3A//soundcloud.com/markwilliams/akron-stam-sa-67%3Fin%3Dmarkwilliams/sets/stam-sa-67-vs-soyuz-su-017fethttps%3A//soundcloud.com/markwilliams/thin-dividers-soyuz-017fet%3Fin%3Dmarkwilliams/sets/stam-sa-67-vs-soyuz-su-017fethttps%3A//soundcloud.com/markwilliams/thin-dividers-stam-sa-67%3Fin%3Dmarkwilliams/sets/stam-sa-67-vs-soyuz-su-017fethttps%3A//soundcloud.com/markwilliams/these-cold-days-soyuz-017fet%3Fin%3Dmarkwilliams/sets/stam-sa-67-vs-soyuz-su-017fethttps%3A//soundcloud.com/markwilliams/these-cold-days-stam-sa-67%3Fin%3Dmarkwilliams/sets/stam-sa-67-vs-soyuz-su-017fethttps%3A//soundcloud.com/markwilliams/difficult-celestial-body-soyuz%3Fin%3Dmarkwilliams/sets/stam-sa-67-vs-soyuz-su-017fethttps%3A//soundcloud.com/markwilliams/difficult-celestial-body-stam%3Fin%3Dmarkwilliams/sets/stam-sa-67-vs-soyuz-su-017fetI got the capsules of the two mics as close as I reasonably could. With each version of each song, the guitar(s) and the vocals were all recorded with the mic as labeled. Vocal was recorded separately from the guitar. I kept the signal path as simple and pure as possible to rule out other differences: each mic went through my Stam 1073MPA (Sowter) as a preamp, and then direct to my Metric Halo LIO-8 (2d) at 24/96. No other processing was done. I matched the volumes quickly by ear, so if there are perceived volume differences, that's probably why. Lastly, I'll note three things: - I didn't use a pop filter, and there are some wind noises on the vocals as a result. The Soyuz was more prone to picking these up. I generally use a windscreen in real-life, but I wanted to keep this test as pure as reasonably possible.
- This highlighted for me why I tend to gravitate toward my WT-72 preamp with the Soyuz: I like to get some tube in the signal path, and the WT-72 has a little less midrange push and a little more open top than the Stam 1073MPA.
- This also highlighted for me how I sing and play differently based on what I hear in my headphones. I "self-EQ" as I perform, placing my vocal in the spot that sounds most right to me given what I'm hearing. On guitar, I might use a different pick or pick edge with the Soyuz vs the SA-67, or I might attack the strings a little differently. Obviously, in this test I wasn't able to do that. I had both mics up in my headphones the whole time.

I load to soundcloud and copy paste links. I've got 8 tracks in the playlist - I thought it was possible to embed the playlist here, rather than 8 separate tracks/embeds. Maybe I'm mistaken? I think I'm just doing it wrong...

I listened quickly on my macbook speakers ( I know I know and the Stam had a nice cut ) but on my Focals The Soyuz Has more weight to it, sounds fuller. Both sound nice on your voice

I've tried just posting the link (no iframe) using the SoundCloud plugin button, using the link button, and using the insert code button, but nothing seems to work. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious... Also just tried putting the link directly in the body of the post. That didn't work, either. OK, I just put each song into the post individually. Sorry for the annoying messiness and bigness of that. If anyone can explain to me how to embed the playlist instead of each song individually, I'll fix it.

I've found this forum doesn't do the best job with things like this compared to some other forum software.

No, it's all the same pre. I've got a 2-channel (Stam) 1073MPA; The SA-67 was plugged into Ch1 and the 017FET was plugged into Ch2. The mics were as closely aligned as I could get them. I played the guitar parts. Then I moved the mics into place for vocals and sang the vocals. So everything on a given song is the same performance.

Both of these mics sound great. The Stam had more low-end extension, or weighted deeper low end, to my ears. But I didn't feel like I was missing that listening to the Soyuz. They just sound different. I guess the Stam felt a bit more polished.
I ordered the SA-67 a couple days ago. Website claims stock will happen this month, but I'm fully expecting it to take a while.

Wonderful comparison Mark, thanks for posting! I've used both mics and they're both so good it depends upon which is a better match for the vocalist. The Stam is more forward, but a little fuller in the low end. The Soyuz has more transparency. If I had to pick one based on the shootout here, I'd take the Stam and EQ a bit and perhaps move another 6" off the mic.

My feeling is that the Soyuz has a slight bump in the low mids that pushes that region forward. It also feels a little more dynamic to me. The SA-67 feels more finished to my ear, with just a touch of natural compression happening, probably in the tube, I'm guessing. I feel like I would need less EQ with the SA-67.
The SA-67 also feels a little more relaxed on the guitars to me vs. the 017FET.
They're both totally workable, IMO. Both sound high quality.
I've never used a real 67, but I have used an M269 extensively. It sounds quite different than either of these.

Really nice! I think both mics totally work; I’d have a hard time picking a favourite.

Jesus!
With that voice I'll take any mic, got Akron on repeat !!
I didn't know you were this talented Mark. Loving your voice and writing
I think Soyuz makes great microphones. I hope one day I have enough time to release my own mics which have been finished for a while

They are both very good Mark ; I hear the difference you'd expect between a tube and transistor design much as you'd expect - the Soyuz could be substituted for a good 87 with similar results and the Stam is a fine mic for sure. It's personal preference really. loved hearing Youngstown again done so well. Cheers, Ross

Excellent performance as usual man!
For me, it's Stam all the way. The Soyuz is definitely a wonderful mic, but something about the Stam just sounds right to me. On both guitar and vocals.

Yep. Mark has a great voice. Per capita, this is greatest collection of strong singers, on an audio website.
Will catch up and listen tonight. Chris P.S. Joshua and Mr. Slate have quite the Pipes too.

Hey dude. First, great singin' and playin'. Feel and vibe I could listen to all day. Both mics sound good and fit you well. On guitars, it's kind of a toss-up for me. Both sound really nice and either one works. On vocals, there's something interesting going on. The Stam has the mid push you'd expect from a 67 voicing, but it also has this other quality where the sort of grit and nuance of your voice comes across more. For me, it has the effect of being more inviting and of conveying more emotion, almost to the point where I was double checking to make sure they were the same take. I hear it across the examples. I think it's a great fit for your voice. Congrats on finally getting it.

Great stuff, Mark. I love the sound of your voice. I'm listening pretty late, so I can really choose, but I don't think either is bad on you. They sound a little more similar than I was expecting.

The Soyuz seems to have a bit more sizzle in the highs but feels thin. Tubes FTW!
