Sounds like a great set up. I agree with everyone who is saying that workflow, comfort and inspiration are what make a great recording space.
On the LUNA tempo question above, no at the moment LUNA does not detect tempo or adapt tempo to a track you record or import. What it can do is vary the tempo of the whole project using different algorythms with very few artefacts ... so speeding up or slowing down a whole song after recording is simple. I use this a lot for any drumming over 120 bpm (where my drumming falls off a cliff) by slowing down the project to 120, playing in the drums and then setting the tempo back to the original speed again. It sounds great ... I have listened out for artefacts on cymbals etc ... and I don’t hear any.
If LUNA gets tempo detection and flex time like features as well it will be a killer feature set

Sorry about the short one sentence replies.. I was travelling back from a poker tournament, and couldn't really type very well... Some updates... I no longer use OXIDE on each channel, just the ATR102 on the two buss atm as far as tape plug ins go. I am also getting into the 1176AE on things like the acoustic guitar and electric guitar. I have sold off the HELIX LT only last week, and continuing with just the HELIX NATIVE plug in for guitars...... (same sound, more flexibility). I think that's the only updates.... Cheers Wiz More importantly how did you do in the tournament?

That's interesting Peter. I've only ever used the ATR-102 on the 2 Bus, and rarely tried Oxide on each channel or a bus. Sometimes I had thoughts I should have a tape sim for each track, the same way a multi-track tape would work, so I'm curious what made you stop using it?

Tape sim on every track works well, IMO, I do that quite often. But not always. Typically Oxide, Softube Tape, or Studer on tracks.
I'm using less and less tape on the mix bus, I do it more per-track now.

Well, I'm mostly ITB as well now. I'm working on new harnesses for the racks and that's been taking forever to finish so I've just used plugins for everything I've been doing and to tell the truth it's just so much easier this way. I'll keep most of the rack gear I have for posterity and for the occasional tracking patch, but for the most part I don't see going back.
Also, Wiz's decision helped me decide on my path, so I have him to thank for helping me realize what's important to me. I think it was a long time coming but sometimes you just have to see someone else take the plunge first.

On the ITB/OTB debate I’m not a purist on either side. I’m a drummer who sometimes used samples to shape drum tracks (often my own samples). I have a bunch of old keyboards but not opposed to using keys samples if I can make it work. I’m using an increasingly hybrid setup when mixing because there’s still a certain beauty that can only be had with analog. I agree that workflow is really important when making records. But IMHO it should not take precedence over sound and creativity. I don’t want a one size fits all drum sound that’s all set up and ready to roll. My best drum sounds happen when I take the time to tinker with different mics, snares, cymbals etc. Why would I ever want to take creativity out of the recording process and replace it with a fully sampled kit that to my ears sounds inferior in every aspect? Sure, sometimes time and budget won’t allow for hours of experimenting when mixing or tracking. But my happiest times in the studio are when I craft (or stumble upon) a sound that truly inspires me. I acknowledge that we all have different goals and work temperaments. I’d say every year I need to tweak my workflow as things can quickly get unwieldy. (I’m at that spot right now!) But nobody ever turned on the radio and said “I love the way the workflow sounds on this song.” We shouldn’t let the process be our master. “I wonder what THIS would sound like” should be the creative impetus of every good engineer. I say all this in the spirit of having a well rounded discussion and not to be critical of others.

I don't know how your pile of rack gear stacks up to what Wiz had but, boy, $25k worth of gear is a lot of "posterity" if you ask me! Sometimes I wish I had amassed a collection like you guys have over the years, but then I think about how I would feel looking and saying "dang I love this stuff, but I'm barely using it and it's like I've got $25k just sitting in my closet." Good thing is it doesn't look like hardware prices are coming down anytime soon, so I guess you've got plenty of time to figure it out.

Most of what I have is DIY stuff, clones, etc. If it were the real name brands, yeah it'd be 20K+ but it's not..

I start each mix with 102 on the 2 bus and find I typically only add studor to buses if I am having a dynamic or first transient problem but do like its tonal shaping too.

One positive about having all the hardware I do is that on a day where worked might have sucked, kids have been a chore and I'm tired as shit by the time I get upstairs to my room just looking at my setup gets me motivated to work on something. I look at all the effort and expense and realize letting it sit for a night isn't an option. But, if I wasn't using it I certainly see the point of selling it off or not acquiring it in the first place if you're able to create what you like ITB.

For the past 4 years, I have been slowly selecting and acquiring the right mics + hardware preamps, 20-some channels of hardware compressors, and 29 channels of hardware EQs, including 48 channels of hardware summing (Rupert Neve 5059 + Heritage Audio MCM-32).
This thread is reminding me of that time I accidentally turned the wrong way on a One Way street. 🤔
(“Hey, why’s everyone going the other direction?” 🤣)

But it is a bit weird that this thread even exists on a site called “Real Gear.”

I’ve built up a nice HW collection of choice pieces over the years. Here I am, obsessing over whether or not I should sell it all, put the $ in the stock market and get an X6. Is this my mid-life crises?

The x6 with some real pres and UA plugs is hard to beat and Luna just keeps getting better and better. Perhaps instead of fretting so over the decision just do it one step at a time, get a used x6 or new as the heritage bundle or substitute would be good and just try it out. You don’t have to get anything else or consider a 3/6/10 plug deal to cover your UA bases and do a project and see? You’ll know soon enough? Oh ya and someone is selling a UA octo card asking $800 at UA forum: just sayin!
