AR51 is trash the 3 I had always sounded broken to me, both capsules Telefunken? Totally disagree with it being trash. The sibilance on vocals has been a hurdle at times, but I've gotten very good sounds using it.

AR/TF 51 and Copperhead, were the two best on me, from the Alchemy Series. TF11 looks/sounds interesting too. Chris

A mic should sounnd as much like the source as possible.

I ran it ( 1 original capsule, 2 new edge term capsules ) thru a chandler Germ pre, Tg1, Avalon 737, Aurora Audio GTQ2, Avid Omni pre & line AD Apollo pre & line AD, & into a Black Lion 192 AD. Also used it w HW compression GTC2/ WA76 which only enhanced what we didn’t like. Maybe they have changed since 2016/2017. They were around $1995 then & a used 87i or 87ai was 2-2800 used dep on looks, body & capsule.

Low-balled and the guy accepted, so it was mine from there. I've gotten results we're really pleased with, so maybe I got lucky. AR-51 -> Chandler M. Cassette -> Burl B2. Wouldn't have bought it if I'd known it was so polarizing! LOL. Edit: signal chain

Never heard a burl converter before. And yeah it’s funny how you said you had to do a lot of eq carving w/ the mic. That is one of things aside from the mic sounding like two diff versions w/ the capsule changes. Since you bought your used for a fair price that may affect your opinion. Also you may have the original version w/ center terminated type capsule vs the edge terminated that replaced it. Imo the $2000 can be spent better elsewhere. Ofc this my experience & ymmv

Well, just like a U47. Chris I can make a U47 or U87 work on whoever but not a AR51. More often than not the 47 or 87 pairs well with most voice. Ntm the added experience/ feeling of singing into a real 47 & how that affects the talent. I remember the first time I heard myself via a real long body u47. A U67 was already mic’d up in the large A live room & u87i in the booth. I didn’t like the 67 sound coming back thru my headphones. Could have been the cue mix or maybe I wasn’t used to hearing my voice like that. They put up the 47 & man oh man I was blown away. 47 into ( forget the preamp ) into the SSL E/ G console Into PTHD. The mix was ran to tape & the tape returns paralleled into the console & PTHD for print & monitoring. It’s been a long time but I think that’s the signal flow. This was b4 I was hands on with engineering wanting to learn every aspect & application. This was at Tree Sound Studios A room.

I am coming to the recording space from the other side of the control room, so most of what I'm doing is just ears and stuff. I have to do a lot of dessing, eq-ing, etc. to get it in the pocket for sure. I'm not arguing that it's a great mic, I'm just saying it's worked for us. I got into the B2 after just not feeling what the Apollo BF was doing. It's taken me a good 7-8 years to assemble the Burl I have today, but it is unmatched on the music we do, rock/electronic stuff. My setup is hybrid, but the Burl is wonderful.

I can only imagine the sound quality difference between a dedicated converter like Burl & all in one interface. I am very intrigued in a new monitor DA! Old session had a lead vocal tracked w/ AR51 into Aurora GTQ2 into Aurora GTC2 doing max -5db GR into Avid Omni & later a Black Lion 192. Vocal treatment: 1.) FF Pro Q2 notching & filters. 2.) FF ProMB > smooth the vocal envelope. 3.) UAD Pultec for color & gain. 4.) L1 knocking off loudest peaks a cpl dB. 5.) R comp w 10ms attack for clarity, texture & balance. 6.) 2 parallel sends for UAD 2a & 76a. 7.) ProQ2 after the parallel comps. 8.) Sends off each parallel comp to harmonics to add to the vox. 9.) blend w the lead. 10.) Blend parallels w Lead. 11.) Add 4 more sends for Verbs & Delays. 12.) Little volume auto for taste & excitement. Great vocal sound but way too much work/ stress. I expect to do all that w/ a $100 blue spark thru an Mbox mini preamp. Not a $1000 -$2000 mic thru a $5,000 pre & comp. The miktek c7e ($899) or Thiersch Blue line M7 FET mic I customized requires way less for a finished vocal. Esp an 87 it’s just filters & parallel comp & boom:) The C7e was better than the AR51 thru the same chain. The AR51 made the Miktek CV4 ( $1699 now, even less used ) sound like a vintage 251 & the CV4 can get real exciting around 9-12 kHz lol. Miktek C7e also has a voltage switch to change the capsule from +44 for a vintage or +60V for modern. I would take the 2 United fet47 $799 & or 1 United Fet47 & 1 C7e $899 all day over one AR51. Those two mics would cover so many vocals & workhorse duties. Throw them thru a Weight tank wt72 pre or Locomotive 286a, or similar V72/76 tube pre to enhance the sound even further.

I honestly don't think that's too crazy of a signal path. That kind of stuff is pretty standard for most modern, dense arrangements. Doesn't necessarily mean the mic sucks — if the end result was awesome, the mic did its job. That said, I agree about the UT FET47. I'd take one over an AR51. I had the United mic for a few weeks and it was really impressive. Only returned it because it didn't offer anything I wasn't already getting with my M149. But man, for $800, it's one hell of a mic.

I can certainly see (hear) the AR/TF 51 on brighter Modern stuff though. IMHO the UT 47 FET, is an excellent complement-And vice versa. Chris

My B80 took long enough that by the time I was ready for one of the newer input cards for hardware inserts, my old MADI motherboard wasn't compatible. So, you have to understand that with ultra handmade gear, that shit happens. LOL on the AR-51 trek. I had to do about the same thing and I totally agree - too much work. But the sound worked for the singers voice in the end. On the work front that's why I went all-in on the Heiserman U47 tube. But, back to the 67 discussion because I probably need one of those as well. Edit: added the quote on the Burl gear for context.

I really prefer to keep the vocal as natural as possible after it’s recorded. If the vocal has something I don’t like I try adjust the mic position first & adjust performance distance from the capsule. I don’t want to have to notch out 10 things & come up with polishing methods when a better mic can be provide better capture.

And back to the topic, sorry guys I would really be interested to hear the WA67 against other mics in its price range like the miktek c7e, the United Fet47, the AA 67. Zen Pro is putting Neumann K67/870 capsules in these Warm 67 so it must be a good foundation to put such an expensive capsule in it. Maybe they upgrade some components idk but to me it still speaks to the quality of the mic.

I always though the TLM67 sounded great and I’d be curious to hear the warm next to it.

Another one to shoot out, in this approximate price range, is the most recent, Soundelux U195. (well some hundreds above the WA-67) Kinda top end/airy "bright-ish" U87ai (but flatter Upper Mid) meets U67 FET, in FLAT mode. Weirdly (though still good) a twist of 47 vibe added, in FAT mode. Like a mixed Neumann Martini, we could call it a "Mutt Lange"! Chris P.S. Always dug the TLM67. Max Mod option cool too.

I really want a 2nd one, but I debate just grabbing a reissue for just a little more.

I'm pretty impressed with the clips I've heard of the WA-67 so far. The Neumann usually sounds slightly better. I assume Warm is still using 3U capsules. It seems like the smooth top k67 is probably Guosheng's best capsule, assuming that's the one that's used in the GZ67 and Warbler MK1.
I wonder how much better the Warm sounds with a NOS tube? Does anybody know if the WA-67 is using the original negative feedback circuit?

Zen Pro sells a WA-67 modded to have the real deal Neumann cap. The fact that it works, as expected, with the Neumann cap makes me suspect that the WA-67 does in fact have the proper feedback circuit. However, it would be great to get some confirmation on this. Picking up a TLM167 or U87ai to do the whole Max Mod thing still interests me quite a bit, but it sounds like the WA-67 may be a great mod platform itself, and for considerably cheaper. Though you won't have the Neumann badge on the side, if that matters. I'm still waiting to get my Stam 67 and evaluate that before I make any further mic moves. I might keep it, or I might go for the cheaper Zen Pro mod or the more expensive Max Mod route.

It looks like Zen Pro still has the modded WA-67s with Neumann capsules in stock, but I wonder for how long? Likewise, putting a Neumann transformer in an MK-67 is a popular mod, and those transformers are no longer freely available. I was able to procure a Neumann capsule recently but it wasn't easy, and I'm sworn to secrecy about my source. I've already got an MK-67 with Neumann transformer, but GAS being what it is, I'd like a pair. Having a pair of the WA-67s would be much more affordable and would allow me to use my MK-67 on vocals while the WA-67s get used on everything else.

I bought one of the last two ZenPro modded WA-67s according to Warren. If he still has one on the site, it should literally be the last one he can offer. That, or he found another source for Neumann caps. Before I purchased it I asked Warren this question: "I believe the U67 had a de-emphasis circuit to cut some of the highs. Does Warm do that in their mic, and/or do you swap out some internals? Just want to be sure the Neumann capsule is not brighter than vintage if it's not being tamed in the Warm." His response was this: "FYI Bryce from Warm confirmed that yes, they followed it to a T." I also confirmed that Warm still offers their full warranty with Warren's capsule mod. I've recently replaced the stock EH tube with a NOS late 60's EF86 Amperex from Bowie, and yes, it makes the mic incrementally better. I've not sung through an original 67, but to my ears this modded Warm has got to be close. It's everything I hoped for, and much more for the level of investment. I'm now using my REDD for more modern songs, and the Warm for vintage. The Warm hangs. In both cases the caps are so good that EQ...if needed...is easy and smooth. FYI that the Warm uses a custom Lundahl transformer. I know I can't get a Neumann tranny any longer, so inquired with Doug/emrr about the Moby. After showing him measurements he told me the Moby would not fit, so even if I could find a Neumann, it wouldn't fit either. Not really a problem, though. I'm happy to stick with the Lundahl.
