Hey guys, I've been budgeting money away for some new purchases. One of those will be a flagship mic. A really nice tube mic, used primarily for acoustic guitar and vocals but that would sound good on other acoustic instruments. I've been reading up on Lawson mics (Someone here recommended one in another thread). They seem to be highly regarded. AND, there happens to be one at a killer price on ebay. I wasn't planning on spending the money so soon but I can afford this I really wanted to.
What the consensus on these? Any reason I shouldn't just shut up and buy it?
I mean someone here should buy it, it seems like such a great deal. If anyone wants to jump on this deal first you'd probably be doing me a favor.

That's a steal. Lawson mics are criminally underrated. I haven't used their 47, but I used the 251 in the studio years ago and it's a really outstanding mic. If you don't already have a flagship LDC, go for it.

Gene is a great guy, super knowledgeable, and been building microphone and gear longer than a lot of us have been alive. It’s worth mentioning that you can buy a 251 quick change headbasket and have two different sounds

Owned one briefly and quickly sold it. Just didn’t have any of the 47 magic to my ears or really much magic of any kind. Seemed kind of generic? Vanilla? And just to let you know that I don’t hold the bar at a 10,000$ vintage Neumann, I love an old soundelux as my primary big ldc.

Jump on it. I'm really tempted, but have been holding out for a Heiserman or a Flea. And the gold is a bit "loud" for my tastes. |

BUY! I didn't realize it but that power supply has a 9 polar pattern selector switch! Will that work with the L47 or just the L251? That is one NIFTY tool to have, especially as a remote next to you in the control room. Not authentic to a 47 or 251, and I'd prefer set-it-and-forget-it 2 or 3 position switch on the mic, but it sure is useful. |

I have a Lawson 251 and have heard the 47 capsule on several occasions. I’d say, if you’re looking for a very good mic and the price is really good, grab it. If you’re looking for something super close to a real 47, it won’t take you there, imo. Yes, Gene is a really nice guy, but something to consider; his microphone line is convertible, similar to Korby. The electronics in the body are the same if you buy his 47 or 251, and then he tunes the capsule both by ear and measurement to replicate a 47 or 251. So it’s not trying to be a clone circuit-wise. Hope this helps!

Also in agreement about it not really a 47 or 251 “clone”...more like a Korby or Blue Bottle where those were the “inspirations” for the capsule tuning. But, they are good sounding microphones.

Jump on it. I'm really tempted, but have been holding out for a Heiserman or a Flea. And the gold is a bit "loud" for my tastes. "Loud" is a good description. The solid gold look is a bit off putting to me too. I wish I could say that I was above caring about how gear looks, but I'm not. |

I've been keeping my eyes open for a u99 too, heard some great things about that mic but it seems there have been more than a few different renditions of that mic and I have trouble figuring out which are the most coveted. |

If you ever get the chance to listen to samples of the Lawson 47 next to the 47 Gene used as the Basis for his mic you find it quite amazing. The thing is it isn’t a 47 I would be crazy about.
I would want to see a picture of the head off the mic to make sure it is indeed a convertible & not an early 47, if it’s the early model the asking price is market value.
Like the Korby is that you can buy the 251 head and the FET electronics, Gene will also sell you a empty head basket so you could add a HK47, Tim Campbell etc.

I had a chance to use his FET47 model once years ago and it's one of the nicest mics I've ever heard. I would imagine the tube version is of the same standard.

I’ve never used the Lawson 47, but have heard it sits somewhere between a 47 and 49 sonically. I will say that I’ve listened to this clip a number of times and this sounds really nice to me.

I owned one briefly. It was a nice sounding mic but had a little more high end than I preferred at the time as I was replacing a vintage Neumann. I sold it and bought a Soundelux U95 which was also a bit brighter than I'd hoped, but closer to what I was looking for.

A couple of things about Lawson, first Gene was building his 47 long before most of the cloners. There were not 8 companies making Transformers, Capsules or bodies so Gene and his wife bought a CNC Machine and either made it themselves or found someone to make it.
Without Lawson and a few others we wouldn’t have the best clone arguments.
All the convertible / Modular systems have one major weakness, all the difference in sound comes from the capsule and what ever else is in the head. We all know in Theory the amp & transformer in a M7/K47/C12 mic shouldn’t matter. Reality is useally very different and theses small differences are what separate the big boys from the rest.
Often that means a designer exaggerates the difference of sound in the capsule to sell the system.
I said earlier that the Lawson 47 nails the sound of the 47 he used as a basis for this mic, in all the clips I have heard it does, I’m just not sure I would have chosen this mic as the one to clone a 47. It’s a damn nice sounding mic, just not what I or many others think a 47 should sound like.
Can a clone be a great mic even if it doesn’t nail the sound of the original? Hell yes! The job isn’t to make the talent sound like they are singing through a vintage long body it’s to make them sound great. Sure it’s easier with the real deal but at times what a clone gets wrong is right for the project.

So the eBay price was lowered to just over $1500...insane...I pulled the trigger...but not on that one, I bought a silver finished L47 instead (just couldn’t bare the gold color).
Excited to report back when I get it.

Thanks for posting this, I watched all those videos and that's what convinced me it would be a good buy. I really liked the tone in all these videos and it's being used in the exact way I'll be using mine (singer songwriter playing and singing at the same time). |
