How many tubes are in this thing, and has anyone ever cracked it open to see if it'd be possible to make it stereo without increasing size? Six tubes including the magic eye. My friend said he thinks it’d be possible to do a stereo unit if he hung the tubes off the back; I imagine he’d do it with ganged controls.

Ganged controls for the task for which you'd use this would probably be best, I would think.

Commonly available tubes, or would this be like a 2k order from Bowie?

The valves are pretty common... 6j5, 6sn7, 6sq7, 6sg7, 6e5 (or 6e5c)... last time we bought a set it was about GBP 80... about 120 USD... I got them all from either tubestore.com or tubedepot.com... can't remember. Stereo is unrealistic in this format as you would need 6 gang pots... matching pots is unrealistic (hence why mastering gear has rotary switches instead).... only realistic method would be to match all the tracks first before assembling them into a pot.
