Hello guys! Thanks for the tips on the last thread.
So, for those who didn't see the last post, I am building a studio for myself and some friends. My background is from recording major artists at a world class studio complex, then I went away from the pro studio world and audio engineering for quite a few years to do early music, and now I'm back building a studio with some friends where I'm trying to match the quality of the large studio I used to work at. I can't match variety or quantity, as we had pairs of matched mint m49's just laying around, and a few too many u47's, c12's etc... Obviously I cannot match that. But since I will be recording a maximum of two channels at the same time, I figured I could match the quality of the signal chain on the budget I have, perhaps even surpass it slightly considering conversion now vs 10 years ago.
I've ordered a Flea 49, and just bought a matched pair of early Neumann Gefell m582's with m94 capsules. This, along with a few mic's I had already should be enough for the next decade or two with the material I will be recording. We'll be doing strictly acoustic stuff on handmade Martin's, a 1700's Italian baroque violin, Irish cittern's etc. Think Gary Paczosa. We have similar methods of miking instruments, and we work with similar sounding music and instruments, so that's pretty much the sound I will be working with.
For conversion, I bought a Prism Titan. Next, I'm getting a Manley Vari-mu for compression.
Now, the question I have is regarding EQ. I always liked our Pultecs in the old studio. A vintage pair, and quite smooth on the master bus, so naturally I was thinking of a couple high quality Pultec clones to slap on the master bus. But then I heard the Mäag EQ, and primarily the air band and sub band. The sound is glorious for acoustic music, but kind of reminds me of what you can do with the traditional program equalisers, only more specialised and perhaps more useful. So, for those of you who have experience from Pultec type EQ's and Mäag EQ's for acoustic music, which did you prefer, and why?
Thanks!
