the drums sound fantastic.... I am having trouble however, getting them to sit in context with my normal sounds....the dominance of the room they were recorded in, even without using ambiences they recorded, is a bit heavy handed, in that the drums sound so stellar, I can't match it with my recorded sounds.
I was actually pondering letting it go
Cheers

Possible to write songs around those sounds. Harder to fit those sounds into your songs.

Possible to write songs around those sounds. Harder to fit those sounds into your songs. Good advice, and exactly what I have been doing today... They really are superb drum recordings... thanks Wiz

If no one has noticed, they have less dynamic range, in actual level, than any other SDX from this generation. Meaning you give a snare a velocity of 30 and 127, the resultant level would be closer than any other SD3, with Massenberg's core being the widest volume swing.
This makes it immediately impressive and “rock more” with multiple sourced midi.
I love the sound of Air Studios. Whether Spitfire strings or BFD2 drums....it always sounds like home for me...lbut, I feel like this is the shower to Decades grower. When i got Decades my first impression was “that as an expensive brush kit” and that Id keep using the Premiere from Core for stick drums, but in actual use, its proven surprisingly well rounded. The one kit with and without tea towels is great....the default kit is good save the super resonant kick.,.they took very little sound design tweaking unlike Core (mostly meaning completely remixing all the bleed levels)...and Decades has a Little Less dynamic range....which makes it generally easier to work with....meanwhile Kramer made me go “wow” on night one...but, its literally never won a shootout in context of my own stuff.

I love you man. Seriously. I don’t really know exactly what all that meant, but it is right - and confusing at the same time. But I think I know what you were saying. I think. As far as Kramer...it’s one I just don’t think I’d benefit from with doing what I do. I love the sounds - but they’re kinda cooler-kid than what I do. Lol.

Possible to write songs around those sounds. Harder to fit those sounds into your songs. This is so true. It’s kind’ve like those memes: what i want to sound like vs. what I think I sound like vs. what I really sound like.

@popman is bfd2 recorded in Air studios or are you describing another sd3 kit?

I find the less dynamic drum sounds to work really well for my music. They're easy to mix and require less finesse in the playing, less processing. They're not nearly as fun to play as the Massenburg samples on the e-drums though, those feel so realistic, for practice and just playing for fun.
I got the 70s Rock EZX recently and it's definitely one of those with a whack-y dynamic range feeling, but some of the sounds are a lot of fun. Haven't tried the Kramer yet. I reallly wish you could demo these somehow. I'm surprised and pleased by how different sounding all the expansion packs are with SD3.

I live to confuse. Yes, when you're using MIDI from their library...and OTHER libraries...the LESS dynamic the samples the easier it is to work with...and to play on an eKit, as a rule, the opposite is true. Which is why prior to SD3 (core)...BFD was the best choice for eKits. It has this VERY dynamic thing...that's really HARD to work with tapping on a keyboard or opening some random MIDI loop... To be clear, I think the Kramer Drums SOUND....really great, at least the couple of kits that caught my ear in a kind of "listen to the drum track alone" way...they sound like nice vintage drums recorded in Air...TODAY...by Kramer....they didn't try to make them sound old-they just used old drums. #points

BFD was incredible I still wish there were some way to get Joe Baressi's Evil Drums for Superior Drummer, that was my favorite BFD kit.

Ok, I love these.
They're definitely (to me) kind of dusty/punchy and squarely in the 70s rock paradigm, which I happen to love. My favorite cymbals of any SDX. My favorite mic'ing arrangement of any SDX. Kramer likes a lot of options, there are a lot of mics on these kits, but none are superfluous. I like to really tailor things. Might have a very mono-y kit with only the snare spreading out a little, or a super dry, wide smack but with a close room mic for centered toms, etc, this setup lets you do a lot with the kits.
It's kinda wild how every time I get another SDX, instead of loading them up and being like, "Yep, ok, some more SD3 sounds" it's like "Wow, ok, I am in a different room with different drums and a different dude behind the console..." Really transports.
Anyway, I'm pumped to have these. Real pumped.

Trigger finger is reeeaaal itchy for Hansa...there are a couple of those dry, vocal booth kits that I really want I did not think I’d use the Hansa vocal booth and I couldn’t have been more wrong. The low end is so great on that kit. Funny enough, the SDX that is really tempting me right now is Orchestral Percussion. If it sounds anywhere as good as Hansa, and the midi files are useful, I could do cool stuff with volume 2 in particular.

There is not a lot of top end on that file?? Cheers Wiz heh, is that a question? lol I dunno, I'm not boosting much up top I don't think, so I guess no? I'd guess that more of what you're maybe responding to is that there's too much in the mids/low mids. It's a demo session where I just mess with stuff, I haven't tried to carve anything up yet.

Damn text, doesn't convey what I expect it to sometimes. I am actually boosting a little bit of highs on the individual snare mics within SD3 so if anything, it's less dull than the unmessed with Eddie Kramer kit. I dunno, they just sound like relatively mellow drums to me. I've only had a quick play with them though so I'm not used to their stamp that much yet. Edit: I just noticed there's some Saturn 2 adding a bit of saturation on the drum bus, it accentuates the mids a bit. Not too drastic though.

The snare is tuned down a good bit, that could be something. The Kramer snares are all very pop-y (like, "pop!" the sound, not the genre) so I tend to like them tuned lower and sometimes velocity limited.

BFD was incredible I still wish there were some way to get Joe Baressi's Evil Drums for Superior Drummer, that was my favorite BFD kit. I've got it. It's weird: I've had a few offers from random folks over the past couple years for it. I don't use it much, but I don't really want to give it up, either, because nothing else sounds like it! I wish Toontrack would either start selling it again, or allow others to install the sounds and issue working licenses.
