First post here! I've got an MXL Mogami Edition V69 tube mic and PSU, but I need a 7 pin XLR cable for it. I saw one that is for the APEX 460 large diaphragm studio condenser microphone (7 pin male to 7 pin female), and I'm wondering if that is compatible. It is made by Yorkville. If it is compatible, would there be any reason to avoid it? Thanks!

Not all tube mic-PSU cables are wired the same. I'd think they would be, end to end, but I know that Chandler REDD cables are different than Miktek CV4 cables. One won't work with the other, I found out.

You should be able to either find the pin-out on the MXL or buy a cable from them.

Pin 1 = B+ Pin 2 = Heater Pin 3 = Pattern (some of the non pattern mics sometimes have the same B+ on this pin) Pin 4 = Ground Pin 5 = Audio + Pin 6 = Audio - Pin 7 = Ground There are different pin layouts for some microphones. Some are having 2x ground and one spare, have seen this. Some expensive boutique guys might change pin assignment just for the sake of being proprietary and selling their overpriced cables. However, over at gs someone posted the pin layout of your mic, and he had his information about the Mogami cable apparently from the MXL customer support. Pin 1 = B+ (red) Pin 2 = Heater (green or blue) Pin 3 = Pattern (some of the non pattern mics sometimes have the same B+ on this pin) (purple) Pin 4 = Ground (shield) Pin 5 = Audio + (orange of twisted pair) Pin 6 = Audio - (white of twisted pair) Pin 7 = Ground (shield) As you can easily see, same pinout, even with the color coding of the different gauges in the original Mogami. So, I would go for the cable of your choice. Best regards

Yes, I am no expert either but have made a c12 and u47, so I just wondered if the idea of the wires within the mike going to their pins on the mike cable connection and that that is marked 1-7 was apparent to you? The cable wires have to be aligned twitch the mike pin out otherwise, you are literally crossing your wires, the mike won’t work or you could potentially have a nasty shock. No fun with the 230 odd Volts in a u47 build, unless you really don’t like your current hair cut and heart rate!  Buying the cable from the manufacturer is a good idea or hiring a tech to do soldering is a good idea, if you are not confident in reading the schematic/pin out and or your fine soldering skills for a 7 wire cable. |

That's beyond my understanding (which is why I'm here!). I did read that the inexpensive tube mics from China use the same cable configuration (Rode is different, apparentaly, though I don't know where those are made). Also, I found one by a company called SWAMP (Australia) on ebay and asked them if their cables would work with my mic, waiting to hear back from them.

It’s not that complicated, if you look at the bottom of the mike, where it connects to the cable there is a black plastic cap with the 7 holes in it. If you look carefully , you will see they are numbered. The numbers correspond with the schematic that will show how the internal wiring connects the interior pin ( inside the mike) to the wires inside the mike.
Rhode are made in Australia.
Do you know that your mike works and that it has not been modded?
I’d say get a cable from the mike manufacturer.

Ask Pro La Audio for a straight through 7 pin XLR cable and you will be fine, mikewithmic That's what all the Telefunken tube mics like the copperhead use. No issues. |

I was told there are no extra electronics in the MXL cable but there might be in others, if that information if of use to anyone, assuming it's accurate.

Unless you want some special high end cable, just get what the manufacturer offers. I doubt you'd do that for an MXL mic anyway. I'm sure any mainstream music store can order one for you if it's not in stock. It's just a cable, not like you're rewiring an old console and searching for extinct parts.

If mikewithmic really likes his mic, or has had mods made to it, the investment in a quality XLR7 cable from Pro Audio LA or Sweetwater would be well worth it. I've had clients give me MXL mics as part of settling a bill, and then passed them on to others free, and they work fine for doing demos. |

I'm very much a higher end cable guy Ward and I agree with you. I just thought that in this case just getting what the manufacturer uses would be the simplest way o go.

It’s probably a pin 1 to 1 cable but, honestly a screwy pin out is a great way for a budget manufacturer to make money on replacement cables.
The safe bet would probably be to buy a cable labeled MXL on EBay with the buyer protection.
If I new the pin out or really really liked the mic REDCO or ProAudio LA. with quality cable would be my go to, but I’m not sure I could justify spending as much or more on a cable than the used value of the mic.
I might see if one of the vendors of Doner mic body’s for the DIY world new the mic and had a budget cable.
