Prefer B both raw and in the mix. Don't feel blown away by either, I should say (despite your obvious vocal talent). Just feels like it's missing a little of the OG magic. Wonder how it compares to the flea, which has been the only one to *sometimes* conjure a little of that magic to my ears; though it certainly can't stack up in a head-to-head with an OG either (as evidenced in that vintage king vid).

This looks interesting, but I can’t find all the info regarding the capsules online- is the h7 Heiserman’s in-house version of the m7 capsule? And then is this therefore a comparison of the k47-type (but dual backplate) and the m7-type with what is essentially u47 fet circuitry (as opposed to u47 circuitry)? If so that sounds cool, I’ve only heard m7’s with tube circuitry (other than Gefell/rft).

Went back and listened to Dan's video...yeah, that thing sounds amazing. But I ain't got $15k...
It's got that reedy midrange - which I honestly associate more with 251s...but I hear more of that midrange signature in A...but I could see it getting a little harsh on my vocal when I really lean into something.

I think my preference is for A. I like the midrange a little more and the low end sounds tighter to me. But we're talking a tiny fraction of a percent here. Both sound really good.

That first ess on B is phasey and weird so my first impression was A for sure. (Going on the mix files).
Now on a few listens, I think that ess is mostly an anomaly. Could easily work with both, they strike me as very balanced and modern with a tad of mid range special sauce/not exactly all that vintagey but cool.

Thanks for that John . I believe A is the Kk47 and B is the M7. The essence of the voice is similar to Beatles recordings on B. An even more interesting comparison would be to hear them against Dan's for sure. As an aside, which mic out of your Upton and Heisermann is best on your voice?
Cheers, Ross

Thanks for sharing the clips John. I Prefer B between the two also, and respectfully agree with plainofjars on the rest. Matching the OG for anyone is a hard thing to do.

I prefer the H/M7 on your voice standalone. I prefer the HK47 when you add the sauce BUT . . . back to the H/M7 in the mix.

I’m torn. I think A has a little more 47 mojo but B is probably all around usable in more instances. As far as that mic Dan has - as much as I love the H47 - that thing sounds amazing. It honestly, it might just be Dan’s voice.

I used the Upton on the thing I posted in the WAYWO Section and I love how that turned out. They’re honestly very similar - Which is what made me want to hear the H7 - so I could have two objectively different mics. I think my H47 with the k47 is bigger on bottom bottom. Might be a little less bright. Might compress a little more. The Upton has low mids a little further up. Both really great mics.

B has a sweeter sound and I think I prefer it after listening to it on my speakers. I was immediately drawn to A in solo on my cans. Curious to hear which is which. My guess is A is the M7, B is the K47.

I would say A is M7 cause it's darker than B. Both are great, but so close I would not bother having both. Great sounding mics, clearly.

So A in all examples is the M7 B in all examples is the K47
I agree that the k47 initially sounds “better” - but it’s more generic sounding than the M7. I’m not saying that’s not good - I just wonder whether I want more 47 character. It’s not always great on me because I have problems in the 1-3kHz range...so when the M7 rolls off top and bottom, it accentuates that...but of course, that’s nothing a MB comp/Dynamic EQ can’t tame. Of course, we’re kind’ve splitting hairs here...they aren’t drastically different...
The obvious answer is to have both...or be haunted.

A does have a harmonic character that jumps out when its stimulated but quickly dampens when the capsule is not being excited. The K7 seems smeared slightly which diffuses the performers expression.

Did you mean the k47 in your last sentence? Btw - I’m just saying M7 and k47 - they’re both Heiserman caps...just so we don’t confuse what we are talking about.

B had a little more life to it, but honestly, neither impressed me. They both seem muted and lack transparency to me. Controlling sibilance shouldn't sacrifice clarity.
I look for transparency first, good strong transient/sibilance handling second, and pickup area third. After that you get into mojo territory.

My honest opinion - which I thought the other day when the mic was here for alignment to the new production psu - is that I need to change out that valve in it. The H47tube has way more sauce than this mic is giving me, and I apologize for not following my instinct and doing it. Bring her back over next week if you can and I'll sort it out. For reference, I'm saying I prefer neither right now. -Dave
