Definitely works for me too. Slow Burn was magic. What a great band and arrangement on that song.

I kinda wonder if lordalvin might borrow/rent @jstieger's Dolly for the next Kacey Musgraves' record. Everything about Kacey is amazing, especially that voice. OMG, that voice . . . just melts me. There's a few things besides Kacey's voice that melts me. She sure aint hard to look at. But she can sang, too. And just like that, all I can think of is hayride. Never heard this before...

You're right John. The bass part bugs me, but the arrangement and the sound staging of the vocals sounds fantastic. No auto-tune either..

Are we getting an updated shootout or a new one with the new H251? Just wishful thinking maybe?

Are we getting an updated shootout or a new one with the new H251? Just wishful thinking maybe? The only mics I trust as much as my Neumanns come from Heiserman. I have incredibly confidence in wave tskguy and mdmitch2 to deliver a microphone as good as the best of what rolled off the AKG assembly line in ~1960

Just stumbled across this nice shootout.
Upton 251 vs Telefunken ELA M 251 with AC701K

I'm not a fan of the lowmids of the Upton that's my biggest complaint also when I demoed it myself. I also had the opportunity to try out an original E and the airy quality neither Bock or Upton nailed. It feels most clones either accentuate the original quality or thinns them out. I'm thinking like Upton=bloated and WA=thinner. A good original 251 really is something special. Wish I could find one cheap 🤣

Just stumbled across this nice shootout. Upton 251 vs Telefunken ELA M 251 with AC701K Vincent, thanks. I found this myself a couple of weeks ago. I felt like the differences between the two were far too subtle to care, while casually listening in my car and AirPods.

Just stumbled across this nice shootout. Upton 251 vs Telefunken ELA M 251 with AC701K That's actually a really cool video. I'm a sucker for the Tele 251 (and 47) — I do think it sounds better here, but not by much. The Upton is still excellent and sounds exactly as I would expect it to.
I wonder how much of it boils down to tube choice. Putting a 12AT7 in my Upton made a noticeable improvement over the stock tube, which already sounded great.
Anyone want to lend me an AC701K?

Anyone want to lend me an AC701K? Yes - tube choices make a difference. Odds are the Upton in the video had Upton's - Electro-Harmonix tube. I like Dallas a lot and he is a genius to make this mic, but I honestly do not like that tube. So, I tried various AT7s (I really like the NOS Mullards) and various GE five star 6072s, including the 6072 and 6072a. I have settled on the 1950s 6072. Tubes do make a difference in the 251, which frankly makes them more fun. And as I have said, Dallas does tune the capsule to taste, so it is hard to compare. The fact that it is this close to the original, is a good thing for the Upton.

Is this an original vintage Telefunken 251 or the copy mic made by the Telefunken USA company who bought the name?

spindriftMy guess is it’s the Tele USA. The PSU doesn’t look like the original, and in the close-up shots, it looks maybe just a tad too pristine to be a vintage mic. To me, anyway. I also vaguely recall reading about Tele USA having a brief run of 251s outfitted with AC701s? I could be wrong though.

I'll let everyone know if someone answers.

Reminds me of the person sitting behind me in the movie theatre eating what they brought from home...bag crackling in my ear through half the movie...totally distracting me from being able to concentrate and enjoy. Which, incidently, is why I refuse to go to movie theatres anymore. I'm a magnet for those people.

That was over a decade ago though.
