There are a lot of really great companies out there with excellent sounding gear. Opto makes sense for an all arounder - Buzz Essence, IGS ONE LA 500, APA Leviathan, Acme Opticom are a handful I've had really nice results with. IGS makes a versatile Vari Mu too called the Tubecore 500.

CAPI 526 is really nice. Compared to my MC77, it seems cleaner to me, but it has the familiar action of an 1176 when you choose similar settings. From a financial standpoint it's a no brainer if you're handy with a soldering iron. It's a challenging build, but I enjoyed it. I'd look at the Hairball stuff too. I can't imagine you'd be disappointed with any of their options. Friend of mine has a pair of the Rev A's and raves about them. Definitely on my shortlist. For mix buss compression (and lately drums), I have a TK Audio BC501, which is like a more useful and full-featured SSL. I love it. The added HPF, mix and ratios adds a lot of envelope shaping capabilities. I don't find the SSL to be as satisfying. It's a build I don't think I could handle. Wonder what someonw would charge to build it? I thought it was like the perfect tracking comp. Fantastic, fast control with color...but year, it wouldn't get as dirty as say an 1176. Although, really crushing with ABI 1176 was probably considered a "limitiation" of that circuit...but that distortion has become its own thing. How much makeup gain does the fc526 have? it might be my next build. I reamp all of my vsti's and if this has enough gain to double as a pre for this duty I'm definitely in. I'm trying to decide between a pair of these or replacing my vp28s.

Makeup gain is just under 40dB. Never tried it as a preamp but it might work with a tube mic or a dynamic...in some certain situations. YMMV

Been sitting on a pair of fc526 kits since they were introduced. Guess I was worried about the calibration procedure. No more. Time to build these puppies
