Must be "bad" for Canadians, I am seeing it fine here.
Neil Young just gave a middle finger to Google and Facebook with his website login. Cost him $20,000 but I am glad he's still an activist.

It's a build I don't think I could handle. Wonder what someonw would charge to build it? I thought it was like the perfect tracking comp. Fantastic, fast control with color...but year, it wouldn't get as dirty as say an 1176. Although, really crushing with ABI 1176 was probably considered a "limitiation" of that circuit...but that distortion has become its own thing. Its still on my list because of this description. what about the build makes it difficult. That was my next build but now I'm cautious lol If you've built things more complex than a guitar pedal, you'll be fine as long as you take your time and double check your steps. The only part that was kind of annoying to me was the meter, but I think Jeff has a pretty clever layout for that, so not that bad actually. The meters on my Lola's were harder. The DOA is challenging, but you could always just get an assembled one if you're not confident doing that part. I like building those myself, because I like the challenge. I read a lot of accounts claiming the calibration is difficult... I do think the instructions for that part are a little bit confusing, but once I re-read it a few times I got the gist and it was actually pretty easy. DEFINITELY get a 500-test jig for that part, otherwise you'll drive yourself insane (DIYRE has a cheap and easy kit to build one of those).

Trying to decide whether I should buy my first outboard compressor or not, serving the purpose of either vocal compression or mix bus compression. Having just gotten into 500 series stuff I'm thinking it'd be cool to go 500 series with this as they tend to be less expensive, so, which one of yours do you cherish most? I'd get a vocal tracking compressor rather than something for mixbus personally.

I've had great results tracking vocals and bass with a Buzz Audio Essence.

Was looking up The Brute. Crazy - I guess they don’t make it anymore. I thought that was one of the most popular compressors out right now.

Google reported this was an unsafe redirecting url Radd is a legit site. I'm not getting any warning from Safari. Don't know why Google thinks its a threat.

Lindell is pretty good in my experience, I liked the EQ one quite a bit, the pultec one. Haven't tried the compressor.

Vocal AND Bus compression? Usually for me those are fairly different choices....
But maybe the Shadow Hills Vandergraph.....or maybe API 529 might do the trick? Totally depends on your tastes and what you are going for.
Tone? Mixing? Tracking? Dynamic Control? Some pumping/flavor?
Personally for me an 1176 style would be my FIRST compressor if I had none. But again others hate that compressor, and certainly wouldn't be first choice for bus.

Not 500 series, but if you want something that'd work fine for bus work and vocals I'd look at the Manley Variable Mu. Cleaner than other Vari Mu types, can get colored if needed, but it's mostly a nice mojo. Great on drum bus or mix bus.
Mike Brauer uses one in his chain of vocal options.

The inward connections brute I had was great for vocal compression. Like it wasn’t even there. I miss that one a lot. I don’t think I quite appreciated what it was back in the day. I was always chasing more colored gear. True story. I will never give up my Brute compressor.

I think the Rupert Neve Designs 535 Diode Bridge Comp would be a nice 1st comp to own. Not as flexible on Attack/Release times, but it works great on anything I've thrown at it.

Here, let me fix this for you . . . Mike Brauer uses used to use one in his chain of vocal options.

Well if we are going to go rack mount a pair of DBX 160 single spaces ( used) are probably the bang for the buck winners.

The JLM Opto mentioned here – the LA500 – is great! It is a sort of LA inspired thing. I have both a 500 version and a pair in a 1U rack; the MAC. I DIYed them (maybe easier build than the CAPI?), but they're sold assembled as well. Great for tracking, and also as a pair on a bus. Switchable HPF in the sidechain and optional slow attack makes it even more unobtrusive.
JLM also does a FET compressor, which is his take on the 1176LN. Haven't tried that one.
The 2 unit wide TK Audio BC501 (SSL inspired) is super for bus duty, adding several features to a classic winner, but can also be used as a fairly gentle tracking comp.

Vocal compression, CAPI FC526 works on the majority of voices I've tried it on, works in some instances where an 1176 might sound a bit aggresive, the CAPI is more transparent under similar limiting. I haven't tried any 500 comps that would be first call for both vocals and mix bus, A-Designs' Nail is great on both in the full rack world.

The FCS P3500 with stereo expander module was essentially a P3 in 500 form. Not made in a decade, very hard to find. Think cleaner dbx with expanded control flexibility. Still my first call for vocal tracking and most bus duties. If I had to get rid of every comp I own, AND keep a 500 type, that'd be it. It's pretty dang universal. I haven't heard everything, of course. Similar might be the SafeSound compressor, also probably hard to find.
I'd agree rack mount dbx 160's are bang for buck, for sure. If you can crimp together a wiring harness, a dbx rack full of nine 903's/etc can often be had super cheap.
