prompted by a cheeky comment I made concerning the mic . . .
Since Michael Joly gave up modding mics 2 years ago, has anyone else offered a mod for the CAD M179?
It is anemic in it's stock form. I have 4 of them and tried to use one yesterday after they've been sitting in the locker untouched for 6 years. They really sound so blech compared to a Neumann U89 for Tom usage.
Or does anyone have a copy of the mod spec? I would like those microphones to be useful again.
Or does anyone have contact coordinates for Mike Joly please?
Many thanks in advance. I don't wish to spend a lot of money on $133 microphones.

Since the circuit board is surface mount, I don’t think you’ll find anyone interested in doing any circuit upgrades. You could try swapping out the capsule, but honestly even the cheapest capsule will cost you at least $100.
I think they are “fine” microphones. Put them on the resonant side of toms along with your U89’s and see if you like that sound.
The pair I have just stayed on a Leslie.

LOL did that yesterday morning out of curiosity which prompted the post. They did not perform well, then I read about a simple and inexpensive mic mod from Michael Joly, and would just like to get the spec as obviously the mics aren't worth anything. Same reason I used to have a pair of 1989 AKG C1000S's parked on a Leslie. Grittier the better!

I have a couple laying around. Maybe I’ll see how one sounds with a Heiserman capsule. Expensive upgrade, but might be a great value overall?

Well many of the CADs use electret capsules so you can't really swap them out without doing some mods to add polarization voltage. I see this model is at least externally polarized. Any capsule would make them sound better but as you said, at too great a cost

They are great for what they are - a good tom mic option. I've never used them for anything else. I'm not going to put 87's or 84's or 251's on toms and risk getting them hit. These work fine. They are not my FAVORITE, but they are about 10,000X's better than 421's.....
Ps - my favorites for toms (generally speaking) are Joly modded Oktava 219 PE's.

Not really something easy to mod without significant gutting.
