RIP Martin Birch. He literally recorded the soundtrack to my musical youth. Such an incredible musical resume. I wonder if donr would be so kind to enlighten us with what it was like to work with Martin?

I was sad to hear of Martin's passing. Of all the producers I've worked with, Martin was my favorite. He engineered at the same time, lived life very much in the moment, and was enthusiastic about the music. He was generous with his knowledge and expertise. He showed me how to use compressors, how to gain stage and how to find a console's sweet spot. He explained how he'd come up in the studio apprentice era from the tea boy. How properly designed outboard gear sounded pretty good to start with the knobs all at 12 o'clock. He was not intrusive as a producer, but continually made suggestions that improved the song and the recording.
I think over my lifetime I've enjoyed every minute of recording in professional studios, but working with Martin stands out as a really good time. He was as much an artist as the artists he recorded. His records will live on. RIP Martin. DFTR.
As far as I know, he didn't record people whose music he didn't like. He curated his own resume.

Listening to Black Sabbath - Mob Rules. Holds up. First LP I bought with my own money. No idea why!

Listening to Black Sabbath - Mob Rules. Holds up. First LP I bought with my own money. No idea why! I still listen to Heaven and Hell as well as Mob Rules once a week or so. The first few seconds of Neon Knights kills me. Every single time. The drums are amazing, doubled kick on the 1's. Guitar tones slay. Geezer being the bass guitar boss he is and Ronnie...such an upgrade from the previous singer. We saw them at the Chicago Amphitheater during the Mob Rules tour. I still remember tiny bits of it. I mostly remember smoking hash in my buddy's '67 Camaro on the way down to the show LOL
