I parted with $1500 on my last computer.
I realized through the process that I should have just bought this machine in the first place instead of trying out the Mac Mini. I think spending more money on a PC that is a bit bigger than you think you need is the smarter long term investment. Unfortunately electronics don't seem to care if its convenient or practical to breakdown or die.

ok - will try to get closer to original question. For my new MBP I dropped around 4200. I use Logic currently for most projects, and wanted to try Luna as I'm on UAD Apollo X interfaces so staying Mac just made most sense. I've had 9 years out of my prior MBP which included extended deployments to the sandbox and at sea, as well as numerous short trips throughout the PacRim and other than upgrading RAM never had an issue. The new MCP isn't user upgradeable so I pretty much maxed the build (see below). Pricey but worth it to me. Caveat - I get a discounted veteran/government rate.
16-inch MacBook Pro - Space Gray With the following configuration: 2.4GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory 64GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory 2TB SSD storage 16-inch Retina display with True Tone Four Thunderbolt 3 ports Touch Bar and Touch ID PRO APPS 065-C171 NONE Logic Pro X Backlit Magic Keyboard - US English Accessory Kit

What are you willing to part with financially on your next build or purchase in regards to your next studio computer is what I was asking. not really interested in the building process or specific model... if that makes more sense? $10K, but $4K sounds a whole lot better.

Ward - agree, just think of all the audioscape goodies the extra 6k can provide Like . . . yeah!! I'm always angling for the next audioscape need, plus I need me some Heiserman Type-19 microphones, to replace U89s on rack toms and use on guitar amps, and voice over work, and so much more. You heard those things? Come on, tskguy wave and mdmitch2, bring them things out!

An extra 6k is two tube compressors or an API 2500 and a real Neve 1073. No Mac will give you that kind of power and hair.

I think $1500-$2000 is my budget. I’m pretty fed up with what I have now. I have tons of stuff that cost more that I don’t use 8 hours a day...it’s the only thing I use every second of every session
