Electro-Voice RE-16, sometimes AKG C 535B is cool.

Greetings. Like the subject line says: which non-57 mics are you using on snare? Where (top/bottom/shell) and why do you like said mic for that application? Many thanks, -09 First, I'm not a fan of 57s on snare. The sound is OK but not great and, contrary to the common ignorant opinion they are fragile - one hit to the front section of the mic and you'll probably need a new cartridge.
The mics I like on snare are:
KM 84 on the side of the drum, where it won't get hit. C451EB, same position M201 RE10
Electro-Voice 664, if you you're got a sloppy, heavy handed drummer who's a danger to the microphone.

I got a pair of 201’s in that sale a few months ago but haven’t tracked drums since to try them out on snare. I increasingly wish I had gotten a second 201 in that sale. Sigh.

I’m gladly past the point of having to worry about drummers hitting microphones thankfully. That was a problem when I had to take any gig I could get, And was split on worrying more about a mic getting hit and how painful it was going to be to edit the horrid playing 😂

Telefunken M80. Top, looking across, 1" off the rim, AKG C460/CK1. Top, looking across, 1.5" off the rim KM84. Side of the shell 441 bottom, 4-5"off the bottom head, aimed dead center but cozied up towards the kick pedal to get some squeak. Why does this matter? Makes it sound real. But I do have those THREE Beyer 201s, and since I'm starting tracking a new record today, hmmmm increasingly wish I had gotten a second 201 in that sale. Sigh. Sorry about that, Mark. I'll never need more than 2. Want another?

Beyerdynamic 420 top/422 bottom/201 shell! Interesting. How do you keep that phase coherent? Do you measure, eyeball it, listen when flipping polarity? I guess I’m more a less mics the better dude, but that sounds interesting. I guess I’ve never been more than two mics on the snare and usually just a 201 off the shell. But now I’m wondering what I’ve been missing. Love to hear about approaches I have no experience with! Cheers, Geoff Oh, I probably should have specified that I never end up using all three at the same time, but sometimes will track all 3. Typically it’s the 420/422 combo, but a lot of my clients are really into the modern psych-rock drum sound (Tame Impala) so I mic the shell in case they want me to lean in that direction. I used to use the 201 on top more, but since I started favoring 4038s overhead, I find I get plenty of snare body from them, so have been opting for the slimmer sound of the 420.

I use a SM57 with TAB transformer if it’s a basher. Otherwise I like an AKG 460, 452/451EB, or Oktava 012.

I use a combination of an i5 and Oktava mc012 on the top and a ATM63 on the bottom. I find the real key (for me) is getting the snare mics time-aligned with the overheads. Once that is dialed in, the snare really comes to life. Much more body and clarity and it sits in the mix much better.
I have used an SM57 on snare top but I always had to add so much to it. The i5 gets me a little closer to what I'm looking for and I get there quicker. I think I need to try micing the side of the snare sometime. I never messed with that. I also wouldn't mind checking out a 201 or an M80 when money isn't so tight.

Latest session . . . tried switching in and out a TON of mics before I went back to what works. C460/CK1 and a Sennheiser M80 aimed across the head, 441 underneath, KM84 side shell.
Fails: 57, Beta 57, M215, Beyer 201, KM84 on top, C535, etc (many of what's mentioned here.
Drum in question was a 1972 Ludwig Supraphonic 14x5, gutted of any internal damping, top head tuned to D4, bottom head G4, small ringer on top. Drummer with a medium strong crack on the stick technique.

Telefunken M80 on top, also a vintage AKG C451c paired with a 57 sounds nice. Mojave MA-201 or U87 on the side

Heil PR20/22. All day long. How would you say it sounds compared to any of the others on the list? I've seen these mentioned before but they always seemed rather pricey, but now I see secondhand ones for reasonably cheap.

I've seen these mentioned before but they always seemed rather pricey, but now I see secondhand ones for reasonably cheap. I started using these over 10 years ago. I always felt I had to do some EQing to get 57s to sound right. They had a high mid bump that never worked for me. As soon as I used the Heil I noticed it sounded right to me right away no eq. Now I’m not saying I never use an eq with this but it’s less messing around. Of course I know that all the old timers will make fun of me and tell me the 57 is the perfect mic blah blah blah but the Heil works for me. I also had a mic question back then and they put me straight through to Bob and told me to try the PR30 on overheads and how they used them on a Slash record and everyone in the studio blind picked the Heil mics on the kit. I thought that was cool that the man himself would talk on the phone. I’ve been a fan ever since. I have PR30’s , PR20’s, and PR22’s. I used to have a PR35 but it walked.

Well that ain't gonna be me.. I can use a 57 if I have to, but there's at least 4 other mics I'd use first. Ok, so I just ordered a pr20 to try. I'm pretty stuck on the beta57a but I'll give it a try on snare and guitar. And pr30 on overheads? Really? Wow. That's crazy talk.

I've tried the some Heil mics at Webster University during an annual conference. I keep meaning to get some in my place, at least to review.

Audix i5 Gives you more top and a beefier bottom (Which you usually want)
However it still doesn’t always have that classic 57 tone that is hard to beat.
441 for a fat disco snare
421 can work too.

Apparently hardcore/punk/indie producer Jay Maas uses a 421 on snare. His stuff sounds bonkers good in those genres so it's definitely worth a try!

I can't remember if I ever tried a 421 on snare. I had 3 of them for years.

Man, 441s seem to have really gone up in price. I'd love to get one, but can't quite justify the price at the moment.
