Greetings.
Like the subject line says: which non-57 mics are you using on snare? Where (top/bottom/shell) and why do you like said mic for that application?
Many thanks, -09

Beyer m201, top of snare, positioned so the hull hits the hihat. It slays the 57, the hh bleed sounds so much nicer.
I usually use an Audix i5 on bottom

I'm a Beyer 201 fan. I rarely use a bottom snare mic. When I do, a 57 does fine.

Haven't tried my Beyer m201, but I'm looking forward to it at some point. If you're looking for a condenser mic kind of thing, I think the Earthworks cardioid mics are fantastic. They're a bit faster than I would ideally prefer, but that can be moderated somewhat by the preamp, of course. I have (1) SR20 and (1) SR69 (they're essentially the same mic, but renumbered). They just tend to sound like the thing you point them at. That's not always what you want, of course, but when it is, they're really nice. Less proximity effect than a lot of other cardioids in my experience, and the off-axis coloration is great.

Beta57a has become my new favorite after using the ATM63HE for a while, which came after the I5.

441 if the drummer will raise his damn HH up enough for it to fit, which is almost never ( ), 201 otherwise. 57 modded with a TAB transformer is no slouch either. It's funny though. I feel like 90% of the time when I learn about the "how" of the tracking of an album, it's a 57.

I like an 84 micing the shell. Strangely too like a c38b peeking up over the rim. Occasionally an AKG d190 if the bright trashy sound is needed or it's a dark, dampened snare. Been wanting to try a m201.

I’ve been doing the 201 lately mainly for the decrease in hi-hat bleed. I do often like the upper mid push from a 57 but I find a little EQ from an LC25 on the 201 gets better results with less bleed.
I also recently did an Oktava MK012 with the screw on -10db pad on under snare and I was really surprised how much I liked that. I might have to get another MK012 just to do that all the time.

I use a combo of 57 and 012 on snare top.

M201 off the side. Stay away from the vents.

441 i5 201 KM84
All great, but different options here.
I'll rarely risk an 84 on the top head, but if I know the drummer I might. Really like it there. However...I'll very often use it on the side of the shell.
Ps - Shure 545S - the old ones with the gun style handle. I like those better than 57's about 80% of the time. Depends on tone and key of song.

Revox M3500 on the top and Audix i5 on the bottom. I like Revox a lot, nice smack...Its 600 ohm mic but somehow it works great with Api 312 style preamp.

I like the SE V7X and SE V7, they have a little better rejection than the SM57. And a little more low end on the V7X, good tone.
You could use a Shure KSM137 or KSM141 if you want to do the condenser thing, which for some reason I don't do but am aware of.
Lately it's the Crimson Yellow SM57 mod on snare. It's almost no different to a stock SM57 but it has just a little more presence on top. I couldn't get a refund so I just stuck it on snare, and it's totally fine. Didn't like it on guitar amps.

I tried the m80 and the m201(twice). Both cost a lot more than other options but really didn't sound all that different. I didn't like the m201's off-axis sound either.

I usually use an AKG D19 strapped together with a 57 and blend them to suit the snare.
An AKG D330 can sound good also.
I've been interested in trying the Sennheiser E845. Anyone tried it?

i5 on top, generally nothing on bottom but if I have some spare inputs I’ll put a 441 down there then usually wind up not using it come mix time.
I got a pair of 201’s in that sale a few months ago but haven’t tracked drums since to try them out on snare.
Generally really happy with the i5 though!

Beyerdynamic 420 top/422 bottom/201 shell! Interesting. How do you keep that phase coherent? Do you measure, eyeball it, listen when flipping polarity? I guess I’m more a less mics the better dude, but that sounds interesting. I guess I’ve never been more than two mics on the snare and usually just a 201 off the shell. But now I’m wondering what I’ve been missing. Love to hear about approaches I have no experience with! Cheers, Geoff

Shure 545 (USA) - sweeter than a 57 EV DS 35 or EV PL95 (same thing) - when I want more mid range Shure 57 with Crimson yellow mod - a 57 with more top end bite when needed
My favorite bottom snare mic these days is the old EV PL80 (USA) It captures the snares in a pleasing, musical way (I didn't expect that). But I'd say I only use a bottom snare mic a third of the time.

Wouldn’t that be frequency dependent? I try to take the time to get it as close as possible by ear. And sometimes it just sounds better when it’s not absolutely visually perfect.
