Turned on my SA-2A for a session a few days ago, and the VU meter didn’t light up. The audio seemed fine, and the needle moved as expected, but no light, so I couldn’t see what I was doing very well. The next day, it lit up fine. The day after that (and ever since), no light. Is this probably a simple bulb replacement? I haven't pulled it out of the rack and opened it up because quite frankly, I don’t have time to fiddle with this right now unless it’s a quick, simple fix and if I already have the replacement bulb. (If indeed that’s what it is.) And again, the audio itself seems unaffected, so it’s not a show-stopper. I’ll email stam, but I wanted to check here, too, in case I get a quicker answer.

Josh has a tech guy working in FLA, probably up on net.
I’ll check if I have his email still.

Depends on what kind of bulb it is. If it's a 120v lamp, then it should just work until the filement ruptures. If its LED or different V+ then the voltage regulator/supply could have a bad component.

OK, so here's the reply I got from Stam support: -------------------- Hi Mark! My name is Vicente and I'm the engineer in charge of the Stam Audio technical support. Regarding your question, unfortunately the light in the VUmeter is built-in to it, so it can't be replaced in that easy way... Just to check if that's the problem, did you check the voltage switch on the rear of your unit? Sometimes having it set to 230V for people who live in a country where 115V is used, derives in problems like the one you are having. If it is set correctly, then I would recommend you to take your unit to a technician of your confidence, or I can put you in contact with Jeff, our official technician for the USA to change the VUmeter of your unit, but as you are no longer covered by our warranty, the costs should be covered by yourself. Let me know how you do with the voltage switch, and what you decide. -------------------- So looks like I need to figure out what the part actually is, and then see how hard (or easy) it will be to replace it. And then source someone to do that work, because as indiehouse recently said - my most valuable resource right now is time. I'm barely clearing 5hrs of sleep a night. And there's also this: Does it seem weird to anyone here that the light in a VU would burn out? How common is a failure like that? The needle still works, it just doesn't light up.

See if they can point you to a link on eBay. I would bet the meter should be $50 or less in qty:1

More common than you think. the lights are out on half my old UREI/UA units. But then, they are famous for this. No worries though, the bulbs burn as much juice as the comp/limiting functions. LOL (slight exaggeration)

Is this related to the in line resister scrubbing off power ? When I built my hairball 76a, was surprised at size of resister before bulb ?
