The Audio industry is big. Each Market is small. The amount of people deciding to play an instrument is big. The amount of people buying things online is big. Podcasting is up worldwide. Streaming, working remotely, all things that are changing the atmosphere of audio. Installation sound is changing and advancing. Think about Museums and Art Galleries, they are about to throw away all their headsets and handheld sound players in favor of directional speakers without any off-axis sound. This virus has certainly changed a lot so far. Havoc doesn't even begin to explain it. Everyone is looking for tools to use for online content. And, due to the pandemic, companies are having a real hard time providing products.

For every client I've had that "got the itch" to record themselves, I've had another (either them, or someone else) come to me who was frustrated, tired, or not capable of doing it. So, you can think of it as a negative, or as a positive. Works both directions. The reality is that to be great at recording, it takes a lifetime of hard work, experience - and, gasp - talent.

Hmmm... I wonder how NAMM 2021 will look. If it even happens at all. Chris

I'm curious if any of the dealers or distributors out there might want to weigh in. Is Covid 19 and the accompanying financial downtown hurting the gear market? I have a friend in the business and she says that entry level recording gear is flying off the shelves. That makes sense as many musicians that heretofore haven't had a home studio are looking for ways to monetize their skills. I've talked to quite a few that just a few months ago wanted no part of home/remote recording but are now asking my advice. I make my living at music so my gear purchases have been limited to good deals on a few used mics and pedals the past few months. Praise the Lord for the PUA - I'm not sure where I'd be without it right now. Also, maybe it's just me but it seems like there are less posts on RGO these days. Maybe many folks are treading water when it comes to studio upgrades? From what I'm been reading elsewhere on the subject, the cheap prosumer sector is booming, all the locked down people with nothing but time on their hands using it to "fulfill" their musical aspirations - more or less. Sweetwater is selling truckloads of Focusrite Scarletts. Oh, joy!
The pro sector is tanking. Those who make their livings at music are all out of work and all the studios are closed. Some of the mastering guys are seeing an uptick though.
The one thing that a lot of pros ARE buying is stuff to do internet broadcasting and online streaming. Also stuff for online collaboration.

There's no way that a bunch of musicians who have a few months off and some money to spend will affect professional studio's / engineers. It's absolutely amazing that most of the new folks starting out have no idea what "gain staging" means, no clue what an insert is, no idea how to deal with the front end mixers in the DAW, no idea what 1/2 normalled means, no idea how to use a compressor, no idea what lifting pin 1 on a XLR cable means, and virtually zero skills at mixing on a competitive level. May sound weird, but it's true. No offense to them - every one starts out at the beginning the road. But they have a long way to go before they are replacing pro's with decades of experience. In fact, they will probably never catch up if the pro's keep at it, because this is a life long journey - and we never quit learning. Case in point - I saw some instagram ad the other day that said something to the effect of : "Your mixes suck? I can show you how to fix that today! Get pro mixes instantly with my time tested techniques". LOL. Anyone who knows anything about mixing knows that is a crock. And yet....the dude is probably making killer bank on his scheme. So enough about me guys already! Plus we know "The Dude" abides... Chris "I don't know about you, but I take comfort in that, known' he's out there. The Dude. Takin' 'er easy for all us sinners."

Hmmm... I wonder how NAMM 2021 will look. If it even happens at all. Chris At this point, it's still slated on the schedule Chris, but honestly, I'd give it a 50% at best chance of actually happening, and even if it does, it will not be the NAMM of the past. Lots of states seeing HUUUGE re-surgence in positive Covid cases the last week or so. I know AZ is up 50% over 2 weeks ago, and it's going to hit CA too as folks just won't adhere to the lockdown strategies. For better or worse, we're not going back to large gatherings (especially large gatherings like NAMM) anytime soon. I have to go to a bank in PHX tomorrow, and their protocol for entering the bank is like going into hospital decontamination center or something. Crazy. We are not out of the woods yet.... (Even though it seems pretty distant from where I'm living)

There were a lot of people buying gear to play on instagram/facebook etc, I've never seen so many SM7bs! I'm totally guilty of stimulus-ing some focal Shapes.. I think you have a lot of people who have had a lot of time on their hands, might as well play a new instrument. I was able to sell a korg minilogue in 2-3 hours, which never happens.

Here it’s drive through for anything not loan related and for that you must have an appointment. Spent 30min in line for the drive through today.

Kind of nice to hear some places are taking more seriously. Here in MT it's like nothing ever even happened.

I just finished the Blue Oyster Cult record. I bought a bunch of stuff in the process, a Silver Bullet, Audioscape 76A and AxeFXIII all great pieces, but I'm done for a while now. No gigs on the horizon until the fall, and that's optimistic. Most have been rescheduled exactly a year later, to fall on the same day of the week.
Live shows will depend on what the virus does, and how people feel about arenas and theaters. Sure killed Broadway, and MSGarden. Let's look at Las Vegas, see what happens and if people come out.
The talent booking agents are cutting their throats. Venue owners have to be hurting too.

Yes, yes and yes. But to my earlier post, it does not take a lifetime of hard work for a bassist to learn how to track themselves at home. And what I’m witnessing is musicians whose gigs and tours have been cancelled buying home recording rigs with the hope of finding alternative ways to make a living.

When they tell a bank robber, they can't let them in... Without a mask AND an appointment, it ain't over yet! I'm tempted just to do a few select meetups, nearby NAMM 2021 (if it happens at all), and that's all folks. I guess it's possible, they might require "temperature taking" before entering the Convention Center. So much for me bringing a hot date along! Chris

"I wonder if you understand what I'm talking about? "I ain't talking about burning down no building." "Coming from the Soul". "Just can't stop"... "When my spark got hot!" (Disco Inferno/Trammps) I can just imagine John E, Boogying down to the Bank, gettin' Down with his Bad Self! Chris

As for us, our demand is CONSISTENTLY insane - but as crazy as demand was, it's about 5x that these days, with no end in sight. Although, we attribute this to a myriad of things - our name getting out there more and more, quality and sonics of our products, etc... it's like the "(im)perfect storm" BUT - rock on to ALL and we hope you're all staying safe amidst these unprecedented times we're all living in.... HISTORY - right before our eyes!
