I've used the usual suspects (Slate, Superior/EZ, Addictive) and loads of other VIs & libraries.
They all sound great, but I find a lot of them sound too hard/smack-y for my tastes, even the more "natural" ones.
I've had more success using a bunch of obscure/random samples I've amassed over the years. These include samples from well-known producers, super old drum libraries (original Drumagog, Supersonic, etc), and kicks/snares that I've shamelessly ripped from songs I like (I know, I know).
Would love to hear about any interesting samples you're using!

To start off, I just came across this yesterday: www.circlesdrumsamples.com/tapeI haven't bought it yet, but based off the free trial pack, these might be some of the best "tape drum" samples I've ever heard.

Bat Lanyard I actually downloaded their free samples a while back. There's some really cool stuff in there for sure. Definitely a lot closer to the kind of drums I'm always aiming for.

I've picked up quite a bit of the catalog through their sales and such. But if I need to layer a sample here and there those are the go-tos. Great stuff.

The Garage pack in Circle Drum Samples sounds awesome, might have to pick it up.
Right now when it comes to commercial drum samples, I’m using either Slate 5 or Getgood Modern and Massive for room augmentation. For direct samples I’m using Slate’s CLA pack mixed with the Getgood Matt Halpern pack. Blending the medium snare from Matt Halpern and The Dong from the CLA pack works so well in modern rock, it almost feels like cheating.
Aside from that I multi-sampled my bell brass a couple months back and it’s been so incredible. I feel spoiled to have it in a TCI all to myself

]They all sound great, but I find a lot of them sound too hard/smack-y for my tastes,! Have you experimented with the velocity window in SD3? The square to the lower right in the drums tab that lets you push the average around. You can make the hits pretty much whatever level of smackiness/unsmackiness you want.

I make tons of drum samples. They end up in good hands. They get used and make it in a few mixes here and there. I also freely share them amongst peers.

Older Alesis drum units, Ugritone, and random ones I've downloaded, recorded, and bought. The very raw ones Ugritone make. A lot of their newer packs are processed but not as bad as Slate or ToonTracks. I sculpt the raw ones but prefer almost any passable studio recording to samples. I'd rather futz about for hours fixing it. The results are worth it.

I’m a drummer so I make my own samples. Sometimes I use them later and sometimes I use them within the same project to isolate the snare etc. For instance a couple of weeks ago I set up an old D12 as a front of kit mic. I loved the way of captured the snare but not the kick. So I took a moment to make a sample library of the snare only through the D12 so I can blend it into the mix later triggering it with the snare track.

My room here in town is pretty dead, although you can get some interesting drum ambience in the adjacent garage area.
But, I have some samples of sessions I’ve done at Wally’s Hydeout and the far room mics can be great for triggered drum ambience. In fact I mixed something that was tracked next door at Studio Discrete where they didn’t capture any rooms. Kind of funny that some of the samples I used are (coincidentally) from the room down the hall. These are all sublet rooms at Hyde Street Studios, FWIW.

Blending the medium snare from Matt Halpern and The Dong from the CLA pack works so well in modern rock, it almost feels like cheating. I just tried that exact combination and it sounds killer. The newest "P IV" Matt Halpern library is crazy good. Have you tried the STL drum samples? Super cheap. I just threw their Truth Kit samples into this very rough demo and I think they sound pretty cool: https%3A//soundcloud.com/tkaitkai/stl-tones-demoHave you experimented with the velocity window in SD3? The square to the lower right in the drums tab that lets you push the average around. You can make the hits pretty much whatever level of smackiness/unsmackiness you want. Just tried that out and it really does help. I've definitely been guilty of leaving everything at 127 out of laziness. Any particular SDX expansions you dig? I've always loved the Nashville toms as well as a few kicks/snares from Custom & Vintage. I sculpt the raw ones but prefer almost any passable studio recording to samples. I'd rather futz about for hours fixing it. The results are worth it. I hear ya. I definitely prefer real drums when I get the chance to record them, but it's rare these days. I've hunted down VIs/libraries that sound organic to me, and the most convincing ones I've found are RealiDrums and Naked Drums. Both Kontakt instruments.

Old, but still enjoying Drumcore, both the drummer loops and the individual samples. It's a little cranky in Pro Tools, but it's my go to. I have SSD5 but haven't explored it yet. And I will also reach for old samples of my Alesis D4 or Roland TR505 to load into Battery if it works for the song...

The one I like the most these days is Decades. It's just beautiful. I also really like a couple of kits each in UK Pop and Southern Soul and Custom and Vintage. At some point I'll grab the Rooms of Hansa as well but haven't yet. Edit: also nice little STL demo! Cool vibe, reminds me of the various combinations of dudes that were Failure/Lusk/The Replicants. Edit II: if you're not familiar with The Replicants, it's *not* the stuff I see on Spotify. It was a really cool album of covers recorded some of those dudes.

Anyone know how to enter the coupon code on Get Good Drums? the P IV is in my cart, but there's nowhere to put the 33% off INDOORS33 coupon code?

I hadn't heard of that Replicants album. Listening to their "Cinnamon Girl" cover... some CRAZY tones going on there. Love it. Just checked out the Decades and Rooms of Hansa previews. Holy f*ck. Time to upgrade. I don't know how I slept on these!

Time to upgrade. I don't know how I slept on these! Yeah, the Superior Drummer stuff has gotten so, so good. If you can handle yourself with MIDI, the sky is the limit. And yeah, that Replicants record is so good! Paul D'Amour is a family friend and, though I liked Tool a lot as a young guy, what really perked my ears up was the stuff he was involved with after he left, like the Replicants and Lusk. I remember when his mom gave me an advance copy of that Replicants record on cassette, I couldn't get enough of it. I thought it was so cool having Lennon and McCartney sort of arguing with each other via covers of "How Do You Sleep?" and "Silly Love Songs". And bringing Maynard in for "Silly Love Songs" was so cool. Also loved their cover of Steely Dan's "Dirty Work". This was the first exposure I had to most of these songs (I was young). Kinda blew my mind coming from just knowing Paul's work with Tool. Then the Lusk record happened and that one really had an impact on me. So much cool weirdness. I remember getting my first pair of 'good' headphones at like age 14 (AKG 240s that I saved up for and phone-ordered from the American Musical Supply catalog) and listening to the Lusk record over and over on my Kenwood discman. Fantastic. I always loved this one, especially when the band kicks in and it gets very Bowie (though I didn't really know who Bowie was at the time). Anyway, I'll stop clogging the thread with this little detour. Just a really cool little segment of music from back then that I had a connection to and that had a big influence on me as a young dude and your very cool STL demo clip reminded me of some of these Paul D'Amour/Failure vibes.
