Has anyone made a professional sounding recording using all fake guitar instruments? If so, which ones? I've heard some stuff on youtube, like Kontakt Strummed or Picked Acoustic, something called Pettinhouse Humbucker Guitar. On the Play side there's EastWest MIDI Guitar Series Vol. 4.
I know it's often easier to just play the part, but midi gives you flexibility for the singer in picking a key or tempo.
Anyone successfully gone that route?

Even with a lot of real life experience I was often blinded by the fact that everything can be right at my fingertips. But: Comeing home from a show of the Berlin Philharmonics my ears spot fake Orchestra right away for days. I just once asked on this board about fake Blues Harp - and made myself look like a fool, because I played next to real players in bands. I should have known better... To my ear fake works as long it's not virtuoso stuff. Even though as a guitar player I can spot fake guitar in miliseconds. My gueswork Drummplayers, Pianoplayers etc. can spot fake right away too. If I accept fake for what it is I can be creative with it, but there is a reason why all the fake movie orchestras end up on a real scoring stage... humans still make a difference. With AI this problem will be solved in the future too.

They use fake instruments on TV sound tracks and the public's used to it. Although my wife did wonder why she'd hear something that sounded like a cross between two instruments.
But I like EastWest's Gypsy violin. I recognized it on a TV show sound track. It sounds like a violin, especially to the general public. I wouldn't have recognized it if I hadn't been using myself. Of course, the fact I recognized it proves it doesn't sound exactly right. But if you're pitching to the general public, how realistic do you really need to be?

I’ve toyed around with a few of the newer guitar VIs, both acoustic and electric. My impression was that any deviation from the built-in grooves + chords would require some serious MIDI programming skills to sound realistic.
As a guitar player, it’s easier for me to just play the part, but it’s probably a great option for some, especially if your gear isn’t up to par.

I'm not enough keyboard player to play guitar on a VI, if only for effect. I have experimented with sequenced sampled guitar, and I still like the idea, haven't done anything with it lately.
Early in this century I made some short comic videos with my wife. I used this instrumental piece as the theme, which used a lot of sampled guitar licks triggered with a sequencer. It definitely has a vibe. It's the first 55 seconds of this video. Stick around if you want to know how "Don't Fear The Reaper" was written.
