I just got a REDD mic and I need suggestions for an outboard compressor(s). I'll be recording mostly vocal and acoustic guitar.
The Black Lion Audio B172A looks interesting.

How aggressive vs. how transparent? There are a number of nice 1176 clones on the market these days, and a couple nice LA-2A-style clones, too.

I don’t have a REDD, but my Audioscape Opto works wonders for my ADK Z-251.

I'm not well versed in compressors or other recording equipment as much as I should be but I do like character and musicality.

If you are wanting something with a bit of weight and colour the vari-mu compressor from Weight Tank (WT-Comp) is a great priced option. I like using this with my Chandler TG mic.

The REDD is arguably the finest new mic in production. I would bet the RS124 would be the best fit if you can afford it.

I would recommend you start with a good opto or the audioscape V-Comp and then add a Bluestripe - which is the combination I tracked with yesterday. And the results are giggle-provoking. Yes, just that good.

I almost pulled the trigger on one last week but I do like the idea of running two different compressors together. Two Rs124s is too much dinero for me at this time. BTW.... Your video/recordings on the REDD mic was one of the determining factors in buying one!

Yes, just that good. I'm definitely interested in these comps. Do you have any experience with the Black Lion Audio B172A? It looks like it might be a perfect 2 in 1 solution but I'm not familiar with their sound/build quality.

Curious about the Myburgh - have not used it.

aremos, we're not talking about those mics. The topic is which compressor would be the best fit for the REDD.

Is it too late to ask what the typical style of vocals and playing will be, and what the budget it?

But I can definitely verify just how amazing the products mentioned are!

Is it too late to ask what the typical style of vocals and playing will be, and what the budget it? Vocal styling of Chris Isaak, Raul Malo and Roy Orbison. Music sounds Rockabilly, Americana and surf. I’ll be recording with vintage guitars and amps.

Maybe BG-2, Sta-Level, or RS124 for somewhat reasonably priced options that fit with that aesthetic.

I’ve used STA-Level, Vac Rac TSL3, AML54f50, UBK Tweaker, LA-2a, Atomic Squeezebox and others with the Chandler REDD mic. All great. For the vibe you’re talking about, the Sta-Level would be a great call. The Sta-Level/REDD Mic is a lovely combo

Based on your microphone and the genre's being recorded most often (CRUCIAL information to have when trying to help someone pick the right compressor for the job and their personal sonic preferences) I would have to humbly suggest that our V-COMP would sonically, slot RIGHT into the fold and make you a very, very happy person, FWIW! ;-) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAtbPJuB9Pu

I might have to have you build one for me......hhmmmm..... FYI...they don't sell on a per-order/per-customer basis. They build limited stock and release for sale periodically. (Read through the image content AS attached.) If you're serious, subscribe to their Instagram account and you'll get notifications on when new product will be available. You can navigate to their site directly from IG and make your purchase. But be aware it is a first-come-first-served approach, so you need to be quick on the trigger. That's how I purchased my BUSS Comp and Opto. I had to stop following them for now, however, as I found myself tempted to buy every piece they make! ;-) Also, I've found their post-purchase communication and service to be second to none. They will answer your questions, give you insights, and take care of you.
