I am researching options for a pair of overheads in the 1000-1200 price range. A couple that seem promising are the Soyuz 013’s and the Samar AL 95’s. Any thoughts?

Josephson C42's are nice.

I'd get condensers first. Ribbons are a little more specific sounding and not as broadly useful. Sweetwater has the Soyuz on sale for the next 2 days...
I still like my MC012s. Røde TF5 (a little out of your price range) are also nice, not as round sounding as the Octava.
I'm interested in the Soyuz mics, but haven't had any experience with them. Get the black ones, those cream and gold mics are UGLY.

I would also offer that a matched pair of Beyerdynamic MC930s are hard to beat in the SDC option! These days I'm flipping back and forth between them and the Sama VL37s. I love what ribbons do to the overall kit picture but also love that the MC930s do virtually nothing but capture it as is. The MC930 matched set is under a grand.

The SU-013s are very nice though. They are warm sounding and not "sizzly" like some SDCs can be. They sound good on overheads. For me in our room, I use SU-013s, KM84s or AKG C61s when I am just going for a picture of the cymbals mostly. When I'm micing to get a full sounding entire drum kit picture, I tend to lean towards the large diaphragm condensers we have instead, mostly Mojave MA200s or AKG 414s.

I have a pair of MXL Oktavamods that I believe are quite similar to these, and they're actually really great overheads. (Full disclosure, I'm buds with Josh from Roswell but I don't get freebies or anything like that). roswellproaudio.com/products/mini-k47-matched-pair

I typically use a pair of AT4050 mics on overheads. Sometimes I will use some modified Oktava MK319s as well. I have not tried the MC930 on overheads yet. They are always used elsewhere. I will give those a shot next time I'm doing mic swaps. I'd probably like them. They have a smoother sound (to my ears) than a lot of other SDC mics.

Can't go wrong with a pair of M160's!

I see used KM184's going for 450-600$ each all the time. For your budget there are few better options.

And if you wanna get real crazy, use a pair of the Soyuz 013 FET closer to the cymbals AND a pair of Coles 4038’s up a bit higher. Complete sonic bliss!

I like the Shure KSM-32. You could certainly get a used pair for under $1k. They're also impressive on many other things as well: guitars, strings, horns.

If the room you are recording in isn’t treated I would go with a pair of m160s.

My Soyuz 013s are really something. Great mics. Also, Coles 4038 for THAT sound.

I wish I could get along with my 160’s as overheads but I just don’t like them In that application. They are fantastic on toms though.
Are you set on small diaphragm for overheads?

We have had m160s up on OHs for a few years now and I'm really tired of them in that spot, FWIW. My studio partner likes 'em and likes to be record ready w/ the house kit. I just swap them out for my sessions, but I did try to get along with them there for a good bit. Much prefer the SF-12 in terms of capturing the whole kit with ribbons, but don't own one. Maybe one day.

And if I need more brightness I'll just blend in a pair of close room mics to get some of that sizzle back. +1 to not getting on with m160's. I know people love those but they just didn't ever work for me.

Hey fellas, don't forget the OP's specified budget! Recently in a dead room I’ve been using a mono fathead with Lundhal transformer in it and love it for my OH. The other of my stereo pair goes on kick and that’s great as well. That would run like half the budget if you got them used. Spot mic cymbals and toms and you still get a decent stereo image if you need it.
