Just for fun I was letting go my ADD brain browsing the internet and came across the advice by @johnkenn to check out SE mics. They are in the 200 range and for this money they don't sound like the typical china mics.
To my ear they may do not reach HQ in the top end but it's a big step forward that they do not try to work with fake top end, to make the impression to have a great microphone when it's not.
I hope my business survives COVID-19 passing. If so I will compare the SE8 to the KM 184

Se mics are actually really nice. The rnr1 is killer. I'd like to try the new tube one.
I've heard good things about the lower end ribbons too.
The se5 is no km84. But better than most at that price range.

Pretty versitle mics. I did that for a scratch track once and thought it was pretty good, but I didn't spend time finding ideal placement or anything so I'm sure it could have been better. I dig em as room mics and overheads too.

Wasn’t JK impressed with the SE-X1 a while back?

I've got a bunch of sE mics. A friend used to work for them. They have their own factory, with their own designs, and their own QC.

That's what RøDE also states and most of their mics sound harsh to me, harsh like typical china mics.

Except for the new TF5 I've thought the same thing about Røde. Modern sE sound MUCH better to me. Some of the early ones I didn't like as much. I thing the sE T2 is truly special (as was the Titan). Both have titanium capsules. sE SDCs I've heard from sE3 on have sounded quite good, as do the various ribbons. I use the X1R ribbons a lot.

I've got an SE1A hopefully coming this week, still waiting on shipping notification. I'll let you know how it goes.
I have the V7X and V7 mics currently, they are great on snare. Sort of all-around like an SM57 but a little more "neutral" sounding to me, a little less of that mid push thing. A little more open on the top end. The V7X has a little more bottom too.

I'd love to hear how they sound compared to real mics.

I have a sE X1D, their condenser designed for (I think) outside kick drums and it's incredible. And of course they discontinued it.

FWIW Amy Winehouse used a 2200a, for Studio vocals. And an original Rode NT1 (grey), on Valerie! All sounded great... Chris

The thing that really stands out to me in the SE X1D sound examples I've looked at is the notable lack of high frequency hype / distortion / ugliness that most 100 dollar condensers seem to have. I wonder if the regular X1 that is still made sounds anywhere the same.

Better than MXL and the like that first hit the $200 range years back.

The dynamic mics in the drum pack are actually great and the V-kick has some contour choices that are nice.

Just tested the SE1A. Pretty good! It's a lot brighter than the Oktava MK 012. I put a polystyrene cap in place of the cheap ceramic cap they were using for capsule coupling. That particular capacitor matters a lot in a microphone that has one, and it made a difference here.
It's a nice sound, if you want a lot of pick attack and top end. It's a different world from the MXL and CAD mics I tried to use a few years ago.
I'll try it in some songs. The MXL R80 ribbon with a new 1.8 u ribbon and headbasket foam/screen removed is really impressive too. Been using that for a while. Many good choices.
