Funny, the only UAD pre I like is their Helios plug. The Neve and their API's fall short to me. I use my own preamps now, but if I'm recording something simple like a podcast for a friend, I use the the Helios plug. It adds a sort of strange EQ, but I like it. I can only imagine how sweet the real thing must be.
One of the things I noticed over the years is the LP's on Atlantic Records, (like Zep or mid period Stones, Crosby, Stills & Nash) always sounded great. I wondered if the actual vinyl productions, or the mastering plant they used helped that happen.

Try the SSL preamp I thought it was one of the best ones in UAD.

I would, but having their Neve and Helios is enough since I use my own preamps anyway.
If I spend any money at UAD it would be for the Capitol Chambers, (just in case I ever want that specific sound) or the 175/176 compressors.

I had 4 Black 3 band all original lustraphone modules The ones that created all the hype. Cool modules..But yes After using them for a few years I came to my own conclusion:they weren’t game changers. No my tracks didn’t magically impart zep or the stones lol. My vintage neves always sounded deeper and bigger for lack of a better word. I also realized I could buy an entire rack of Capi pre amps for the price of one module and after comparing found the capis more useful.and way more gain/headroom.

Funny after chasing the rainbows for years I barely have any vintage gear anymore.a couple km 84’s,c12a’s and 2 Neve 1084’s. And honestly if I dumped those Today I’d just get some Soyuz 13’s and BAE or whatever’s and be completely happy. I just sold my last RCA 44 last week..cause Stager!

Yeah I think as we get older we start to understand that reliability and repeatability out weigh the audio folk lore. You know the more I think about it one would think the messed up Neve’s Scott Dickers of the Onion had should have scared me away ! Instead I continue to keep my 8ch of Dan Alexander’s working. We live in a new golden age of inspired by, clones and original designs, let’s just hope most of these guys survive the current economy.

I had the raggedy low headroom Helios modules here. The rebuilds I'm talking about. They were pushed by The King but I adjudged them to be harsh and just plain a bright sound. Sold them quickly. I felt that I was had by The King.

"Type 69" was Tony Arnolds rebranding thing. smart move as the real rather un-glamorous name for those 3 band passive modules was the "0011" module
