Anyone transferred over to a new Mac from an older one recently. I've been using the same quad core i7 Mac mini since late 2012 but pulled the trigger on a new 16 core Mac Pro that will be here the end of the month. Now I'm trying to decide how to get all the plugins, software licenses, etc, etc, over to the new computer with the least amount of trouble. I keep my Mac mini pretty clean and record everything onto external drives along with having all my samples from things like superior drummer and Komplete Kontrol on an external drive, so that should save some time. Just looking for any advice from anyone that has done this recently.

I tried doing that several years back...it was a huge failure. About half my licenses transferred correctly. The other half not at all. It took so long sorting it all out that I eventually did a clean install anyway. And I'm like you, I have sessions on external drives, my sample libraries on external drives, and a good majority of my stuff is on iLock, and it was still a nightmare

Beware if Catalina OS is installed on the new computer. I installed Catalina OS and now it doesn't recognize any of my external drives. Catalina OS uses a different disc formatting system. Old drives are formatted with OS extended Journaled and can't transfer over data. Still trying to figure it out.

All my drives are extended journaled. The defacto Mac OS format. What are we supposed to do?

I think it is security related and I thought could be defeated ?

It’s generally a better file system than HFS+. It increases speed of read/write access on SSDs, and data encryption (if desired) is easier. Data can be transferred over, but the file system does have to be “rewritten,” as it were. I’ve had to do this a few times and it seemed a little weird at first, but I haven’t had any actual issues in practice.

I’ve actually had to transfer over to new machines several times in the past few months (long, long story...). The Migration Assistant works fine, but given the situation, I would actually recommend doing a totally fresh, clean install. Yes, it will suck and take awhile, and you’ll probably forget some random plugin that you won’t realize until a month later, but it’s really the best way to know *exactly* what’s on your system from Day 1 with a new machine. It may take a full day of your life, but if you plan it out in advance, going through your current system and making notes of everything you’ll need to install, it’s not that bad. Open a bottle of wine and make some popcorn. The biggest possible issue as far as I’m concerned is whether you’re currently on Catalina already or not. If you are, then you’re going to be fine. If you’re currently on Mojave or High Sierra, things could be a little trickier, depending on whether or not all the software you use and all the drivers you need are fully ready for Catalina. Your new Mac Pro will definitely ship with Catalina, so if any of your software isn’t ready for Catalina (SpectraFoo still isn’t ready, for instance), there are going to be some bumps in the road. I don’t think the new Mac Pros will even run Mojave, but there may be a backdoor way that someone’s figured out. What OS are you running now? Anything you use (software or hardware drivers) that aren’t Catalina-ready?

I'm not sure if this would help you in this instance, but the way my system is might work for you.
After loading up the 256 Gig SSD on my trashcan MacPro, I bought a T-bolt card cage from Otherworld and cloned my internal drive to a terrabite SSD. Ever since, I've run my MacPro from the external drive, and that's paid off when the graphics card failed in the MacPro, twice. Each time I was able to work with my laptop while it was repaired, and I lost access to nothing, nor any data. It's all external on drives in the cage, and backed up of course.
If you prepared a Catalina external drive now with all your plugs, VI's and licenses on it, you could just boot the new computer from it and not worry about getting going when the machine comes.

I just built a Catalina System on SSD (was running High Sierra on SSD , couldn't go Mojave ).
I just booted from it, worked on it for a bit. rebooted off the other drive and kept working.
I slowly installed, only what I needed. None of the plugs I don't use. In fact all I have on it is....
Logic Pro X
Final Cut Pro X
HX Edit
UAD software and plugs
M7 Control plug in
Fab Filter PRO Q3 and PRO L
Sonarworks.
Superior Drummer
And Carbon Copy Cloner.
Makes my LATE 2103 i5 with 8 Gig run like a gazelle....
I don't think I would ever do it another way again, buy another disk and slowly work on it so you know A) it all works. B)You have no down time.
Cheers
Wiz

To the OP I have migrated to a new computer a few times. Just used the basic wizard that Mac OS offers when setting up the new computer, and then it reads files from my Time Machine backups. I had no issues with licenses that I can recall.
And as far as the other concern mentioned over external drives: I have the standard SSD in my Mac, and use several old school external hard drives. They all use the old journaled format. No issues with pulling files, backing things up, etc. If I buy an external SSD in the future I will likely format that in the new system.

Thanks to everyone for the tips. I've been running Catalina on my Mac mini for a while now and so far have had no problems with any software or external drives. Based on the feedback I think I will back up the Mac mini with time machine so I have everything in case I need it and then just do a clean install on the new computer. I like the idea of not putting things on it that have accumulated on the mini over the past 8 years that I never use anyway. I think I will just take my time and enjoy the process.

In addition to the wine and popcorn, might I recommend firing up Cool Hand Luke in the background? Just in case, you know, there's a failure to communicate?

Living here in the mountains of Durango, CO with 12mbps download speed I may need a few more movies and bottles of wine (or good Kentucky Bourbon) to really relax and enjoy the process. Just glad I already have all my drum and keyboard samples on an external drive.

Old drives are formatted with OS extended Journaled and can't transfer over data. Still trying to figure it out. This is why I have always kept an old POS laptop around from before any major OS upgrades. I can always at least open and find some utility to convert it then Email it to myself. Another a reason I have such a large storage unit!

I did two times and migration assistant worked flawless two times. Everybody told me not to do it, but it saved me days of work. And I will do it again....
