I love the bright, hard sound of the KM184. What some people bemoan, I celebrate. It suits my ear and aesthetic. I don't have one right now. I wish I had two. It was the first "great" condenser mic that I owned. It showed me that there is "another level" to microphone quality, beyond the midrange stuff we all use and know about. And especially far beyond the blue light special mics many of us have encountered, or even started with.
The fact that some say the KM84 is better is just incredible to me, it must be just "that good." Mics that good are things that high level pros and collectors talk about, and people lucky enough to own them any way. It's incredible to me that there might even be a "level" beyond the KM184. Rare air kind of stuff.
So I'm glad you got your mic and aren't slumming around where you don't belong at the bottom of the barrel.

All that said, one thing I've never tried - a 184 into a Locomotive, Weight Tank or Coil tube pre. That could be really cool. I'll put it on my list of "must check out" things to do. LOL

I've used both. The KM 184 sounds quite similar to the 84, but it's a little thinner. The 84 does a magic trick, when it comes to engineering there isn't supposed to be any magic, but it's true. You can just about point the 84 at anything and play, and it will sound good, like uhh.. really good. The only mic that works almost the same way I've tried is the Soyuz 0-13 FET. It's very similar, quieter and has more gain. The KM184 is pretty close though so you can definitely be happy using one. It's nothing like the cheap imitations. Also, in a pinch, the KM84 is a good vocal mic! Agreed about the Soyuz FET. I bought a pair instead of the 184’s and love em. If the Soyuz didn’t exist I would have probably bought the 184s.

The biggest problem the 184 has is sensitivity to RFI. That means you pretty much always want to avoid using it with transformerless microphone preamps. Assuming I can cover that issue, I'd take it over any of the contemporary competition. Interesting. I've not had that issue using either Millennia or Syteks with the 184. -09

With the two ones which got stolen I had three ones and never had such a problem...

LOL A lot of transformer coupled tube pre’s have a natural and/or equalized treble boost, at least vintage ones. The extra low drive Z of some condensers makes it even bigger. Sometimes it’s a fail. Many times an input pad also causes some treble boost, but also tames the mic, and it’s an inbetween setting.

Yeah, I was thinking the CA70 with the negative feedback boosted could be a good call.

Had them on m ym screen but the retailer only had a stereo pair. I am sure I will try the Soyuz 0-13 one day and if its any similar to the "magic" Martin told us I will keep it. But for the moment I could not be happier than with a standard which I know from day 0 on.

Always good to have equipment you can trust and that you know intimately!! Much easier and faster to work with.

This is seriously great to hear, mrholmes! So much gear discussion tends to revolve around talk of the “next piece of gear”. It’s great to just hear someone talk about how much they love a mic they bought. Now let’s hear some stuff you’re recording with it!!

I probably find some spare time to do some drastic AB's between a Cheap MIC and the KM148. But it's not preference at the time because I am working on a song and Martin John Butler is my paid ear and critic.

Assuming I can cover that issue, I'd take it over any of the contemporary competition. They had two different versions of KM184. The "fixed" version actually has a second PCB with nothing but ground copper and it's soldered to the back of the main PCB.

You guys remember the old GS thread where someone put up blind KM84 and KM184 clips and most folks chose the KM184 as their favorite and how all the GS bigshots pontificated on how smart they were for pages and pages until it was revealed that most people chose the KM184 and then it was nothing but excuses, backtracking, and accusations of trickery for pages and pages?
Good times.
Classic Purple-site chuckles.

The trouble is that when we go into a studio, we wouldn't know which version they have.

The trouble is that when we go into a studio, we wouldn't know which version they have. One version was silver, the other was dark grey. I don't know which is which and I have both versions, lol. I'd have to open them up to take a look.

The silver and dark grey are just cosmetic options, they are both available. That GS thread was hilarious.

Come on its GS if you can't do it with the 84, you can't do it with the 184 either. On GS, they forget the hard part - performing in front of the microphone, they are so obsessed by gear that I wonder myself why I have been there so long.
Saying the 184 is bad because it's not the 84🙈
I am very thankful for that I learned to let go all feelings when it comes to gear. Is working the way I like it, fine I do my job.
