You guys really think I need the i7? I think I've asked this before...but even the i5 benchscores almost twice as fast as my 2012... I wouldn't get any less than the i7. That's just me. I have fairly big sessions going from 50-150 tracks and 30-40+ plugins for a finished song, but I'm an artist whom tracks, produces and mixes all in the same session.

I also do everything in my home sudio - track/ mix - and since I'm not moving the computer about - I got a 2019 iMac i9 last year (8 cores and 8 virtual cores) - 27' screen - clear as can be - turns out the screen quality matters and I'm not willing to squint. I bought a cheaper smaller Dell screen to sit beside - can't have too much screen space. Installed my own ram. (extra 32 gb)
I don't run a lot of tracks through Logic Pro X: maybe 16 -24 on average - this includes mix-bus and sends - I use some 3rd party plugs. I have just an interface and a Silver Bullet amp - This computer stays cool - not noisy - however - but sometimes I have to wait - even with an i9 cpu - even with 8-16 cores - wait a bit when recording for the computer to process - and 'settle down'. Before I hit record again. I would not want less power even for my modest set-up

Damn. That doesn’t sound right.

No, that doesn’t sound right at all. You should troubleshoot that. I don’t really have that problem in my 2012 mini.

I had a similar problem with my 2018 i7 Mac mini , turned out it was a WD blue 7000 rpm spinner drive I use for backup. When I un mount this drive there is no waiting so maybe check any mounted external drives .

Perhaps, a lag between the exchange between the internal ssd and a fast Samsung X5 ssd.. However, the computer rarely crashes with Logic Pro - like the old 2011 iMac I replaced. Seems connected to CPU processing. Dunno. iZotope software like Ozone seem to take up quite a bit of processing - as compared to the plugins that come with Logic.

I would think you should be able to operate the space shuttle with that computer. Shouldn’t be sweating.

Seems like a read/write thing. Have you tried a test and move your session to your internal drive to see if you get the same issue? What’s your interface?

Ya no disrespect but an i9 and ssd and good ram shouldn’t be lagging at all processing audio, something doesn’t seem right ?

I would think you should be able to operate the space shuttle with that computer. Shouldn’t be sweating. They sent man to the moon with a computer that had less power than a modern scientific calculator. The first space shuttle had a computer with less power than an Apple IIe.. with only 1MB of ram and less than 1% the processing power of a Xbox.

A read/write delay? ...Perhaps - that might be worth checking out - so I may try when I'm tracking to do it all internal. Interface is an Audient ID 44. Fed by a silver Bullet's preamps, and/or some pedals through the Silver Bullet.

It's the external SSD. Same thing happens with my current setup. Whatever I'm working on sits on the internal SSD and then I transfer it to the external afterward. I'm using a Samsung also.

I'm in the middle of a project currently. Next one. I'll do what you suggest - all internal (then transfer to the Samsung X5 external - thunderbolt connected) - and we will see!

Because Apple has free and easy returns, I snagged a Mac Mini refurb (i7, 512 SSD) for 1099. I can put 32 GB RAM in for another 135. The thought process here is that I could sell my 2012 Mac Mini on the bay or something. They still seem to be fetching around 500, give or take. So, I'd be in for around 700-800 for the new computer and rock that for another 4 years or so and see where things are. That way, I don't have to mess around with selling my monitor, which has a handy built-in dock (USB, Thunderbolt).
If the new mini isn't cutting it, then I have the 2020 iMac to fall back on, albeit for more than double the price.

(Although I'd also have to get an eGPU b/c of video work...)

I think the gains in CPU may be pretty significant.

Well, this is where the Apple Silicon announcements come in. The next Apple event is second week of November. It is widely expected (and has been leaked) that the event will primarily be focused on releasing the first Apple Silicon Macs. Right now, speculation is rampant that it will be a laptop of some kind: Macbook or Macbook Air. Nobody's leaked a November Mac Mini release rumor yet. But hey, it's still 3+ weeks away, so who knows. I think it would be awesome if there were a Mac Mini with improved GPU, and in my case, I'm probably going to wait until then just to see if there are any surprises.

It's true, but Apple have said that is a machine that will NOT see the light of day: it's merely meant as a developer machine, with an old A processor (an A12Z, I think??). But yes, to me that indicated that a Mini would be the first Apple Silicon machine released - however, that's not what's being leaked right now. Again, who knows? Hopefully we all will in about 3 weeks...

Oh, and "one more thing": The Intel UHD 630 GPU currently in the Mac Mini scores 3771 on Geekbench Metal, and the A12Z Bionic chip scores 9558 (albeit, that's when it's in an iPad Pro, so it could score higher than that in a Mini enclosure with a fan and everything). It's going to be interesting.

It's going to be interesting. This makes me want to just ride out my 2012. I’ve been running some tests and paying attention to processing. I’m not actually redlining my mini, but I get to about half way on the system usage meters in PT (even less in OS Activity Monitor) and the fans kick on. I start Chrome and the fans kick on. So, I guess what I’m really needing is a machine that’s quieter for my one room studio. I will say to that my mini’s response is pretty sluggish. Especially with Chrome. I wonder if it’s the OS or just not having things optimized? I wonder if a clean wipe and reinstall would help? I’m getting the new Mini refurb today. Should be interesting.
