Depends on you goal for it. Its probably hard to get hurt for $60 if it actually works. I haven't played one of the Alesis sets, but often cheap electronic sets have mis triggering issues. Hell even expensive V-drums have those issues.

I've been really wondering how playing with sticks might change things up...just been using pads...figure if it doesn't help, I'll just be out $60

I'm sure it's decent. I've never used it but I used a Alesis Sample Pad live for a couple of years, it's knock off SPD for about 1/4 of the price and the triggering was pretty good.

I don't think the samples built in sound all that great, very "digital". I guess you can just replace those once tracked.

A few of the old Alesis D4 and D5 samples are great. A few out out of the hundreds of them. The "speed metal" kick is on tons of rock and metal records. This is cheaper than the unit modules on ebay but I don't know what samples are on here.

Ho-leee SHIT I can't play drums... But this is AWESOME. Definitely check in SD3 to see if they’ve got a preset for that kit. Makes it a lot easier.

They have the DM5 and DM10...Mine is DM7. I can select the DM10 and all the basic stuff works - just not like sidestick, ride bell, etc.

This is gonna be fun. I honestly can’t play worth a shit (might be better when I’m not playing with wooden kitchen spoons)...

Sounds like you're having fun. That alone is probably worth the 60 bones.
Get some real sticks. Make some music and ENJOY.

Think I've figured out that these are only single zone trigger pads...so that's kind of a bummer. But I might be convinced enough to try and find a nicer used Roland or something.

Are there controllers that are ONLY controllers? Something where I'm not paying for modules with shitty drum sounds?

The Rolands are good but the foam wears out and they’re expensive. Alesis electronic kits you have to fix the pitches or change the midi notes a tiny bit in the mix.
Most of the Alesis samples are awful. They’re are about a dozen per module that don’t suck. They’re not lofi plug and play cool like the midiverb I and II. You can look up which ones are not totally awful pretty easily and if you want those separately from the modules for your mix, use google. Typically bungling Alesis has refused release their good old samples digitally even though that’s the sound (entirely or blended with real hits) of many 80s and 90s releases that people would pay real money for those samples that don’t suck inside a good vi if you just told them or hinted at the records they were used on.

Are there controllers that are ONLY controllers? Something where I'm not paying for modules with shitty drum sounds? Think of the module as the control brain to translate the triggers via MIDI. I had a KAT DK-10 module that I used with a D4 and then with different drum virtual instruments. I don't play by nature, but was able to add some simple parts. If you think of the price of the kit as pads + MIDI interface, then you're better off. Any of the VI's will have better sounds. I like Drumcore because of the included grooves and MIDI Kits, but also just upgraded to Slate Session Drums 5. And have Battery 4 to re-create my old D4 or my since-sold TR-505.

I get that. I haven’t even heard the sounds from this kit. After trying to play some more...uh, I might just leave this to the pros lol. Not totally sure this gives me any advantage over the pads...

I used to LOVE playing that song when I was in High School and had a big concert tom set.

This is kind've sad though...I'm TERRIBLE lol. I guess it's years of my left hand being the kick drum. But after playing around a while, using sticks might make some things a little quicker and more "drummer correct."
