I don't know if there are any Fountains of Wayne fans here but I thought they were great. Adam Schlesinger wrote just such solid alt-pop gems. He also composed a bunch of music for film (most notably the Tom Hanks thing "That Thing You Do" which was about a fake 60s band and the title song you may recall turned into an actual hit).
I saw FOW open for Smashing Pumpkins in about 1997. I was a teenager and was there for the Pumpkins but was totally charmed by FOW and had been a fan since.
Anyway, the damn COVID-19 got him today. RIP.

Yeah, he also produced a Monkees Christmas album that I think is actually nice change of pace from other holiday fare. FOW was right up my alley, music and attitude wise. You don't call your band something silly like Fountains of Wayne without having the chops to shutdown any naysayers.
Adam owned a studio in NYC called Stratosphere Sound with his bandmates from two different bands: Andy Chase from Ivy; and Jame Iha from Tinted Windows. It was in the meatpacking district for a few years and then caught on fire and they moved it to Chelsea. They closed it in 2012 due to rents rising and not enough business to support that. But he and Iha and D'Arcy from Smashing Pumpkins also owned a record label. When I look at the roster and think about albums the studio worked on I can see the Fountains of Wayne influence, although I don't think Adam was by any means the main engineer from day-to-day.
This guy was super prolific and was writing for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Cathy Griffin's talk show, Lyrics and Music, and just a bunch of other projects. Hard to believe the world has lost a guy with such impact to a virus. But this is the story we're going to hear everyday for the foreseeable future.

Loved his work. Brilliant man. So sad. We lost Ellis Marsalis and Wallace Roney as well. It’s all truly heartbreaking.

Adam did a ton of great work.
PLUS Ellis and Wallace. This thing is freaking crazy.

Fountains of Wayne are part of the bedrock of my love for music. Somehow I had a copy of their self-titled record and Utopia Parkway in grade school and I listened to them all the time, and still revisit them a lot today. Adam Schlesinger's passing to COVID-19 is a major lose to pop music. My friends and I recorded this song a couple months ago and I thought it be a good time to share it. At least for my contributions to the song Fountains of Wayne were my frame of reference. demolove.bandcamp.com/track/marlane
